About This Text

Author: Mordechai Jaffe
Levush HaOrah, a commentary on Rashi’s Torah commentary, is the sixth volume of Rabbi Mordechai Jaffe’s ten-part work, Levush Malkhut. The word “orah” (light), like the titles of the other volumes, is taken from Esther 8:16. It was chosen as the title for this volume of commentary on Rashi's Torah commentary because of a tradition that “light” in the Esther verse means Torah. Rabbi Jaffe spent more than four decades on the work, writing a little on each week’s Torah portion and adding new material each year. The work often engages with other supercommentaries on Rashi, especially those of Eliyahu Mizrachi and the Gur Aryeh (by Maharal) — and even with Rashi himself.
