מַשְׁכּוֹן m. (שָׁכַן) security, pledge. B. Mets. VI, 7 הלוהו על המ׳ if one loaned on a pledge. Ib. מותר … מַשְׁכּוֹנוֹ וכ׳ man is permitted to hire out the poor man’s pledge (for the debtor’s benefit). Ib. 82ᵃ (in Chald. dict.) בדלא שוי מ׳ וכ׳ when the pawn is not worth the money loaned on it. Ib. בעל חוב קונה מ׳ the creditor owns the pledge (for the time being, and is reponsible for it); a. fr.—Ex. R. s. 31 אל תהא קורא מִשְׁכָּנִי אלא מַשְׁכּוֹנִי read not (Lev. XXVI, 11) ‘my dwelling’ but ‘my pledge’. Ex. R. s. 35 (play on למשכן, Ex. XXVI, 15) שהוא עומד למַשְׁכָּן וכ׳ the sanctuary stands as a pledge, when the Israelites deserve destruction, it is seized on their account.—Pl. משְׁכּוֹנוֹת, מַשְׁכָּנוֹת. (v. supra); Tanḥ. Naso 14. Ex. R. l. c. (with ref. to Ex. XXII, 25), cmp. חֲבוֹלָה; a. fr.
