From a strictly logical point of view it appears that the stretching forth of his hand was with his rod.79That is, when God told Moses, Stretch forth thy hand, he meant stretch forth thy rod with thy hand (Krinsky). Behold, it is written afterwards, And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven,80It is thus perfectly logically to assume that when God told him, Stretch forth thy hand toward heaven, He meant stretch forth thy rod with thy hand toward heaven. that is, in the air above. In the open firmament of heaven (Gen. 1:20) is similar.81Heaven here is short for or refers to the firmament of heaven, which refers to the air and not to heaven per se (Weiser).
