AND THE LORD SAID. The Torah is not88Always. in chronological order.89What is reported in verse 19 had to take place before what is recorded in verse 18. It is illogical for Moses to have told Jethro that he was going to Egypt before being informed by the Lord that Pharaoh was dead. The meaning of and the Lord said is, and the Lord had said.90For the reasons noted in note 89 we must translate verse 19 as: and the Lord had said to Moses in Midian (i.e., before Moses had taken leave of Jethro), Go return into Egypt. Similarly, And out of the ground made the Lord to grow91See I.E. on Gen. 2:9. (Gen. 2:9) and many other such instances. Now when Moses was handing over Jethro’s sheep to Jethro, God assured him that he could go to Egypt without trepidation because Pharaoh and his servants who knew about the incident of the Egyptian were dead. This is the meaning of that the king of Egypt died (Ex. 2:23); as long as Pharaoh lived it was improper for Moses to be a messenger to him.92The same Pharaoh who knew of the incident of the Egyptian.
