AND WILL PROCLAIM THE NAME OF THE LORD. Scripture writes with regard to Abraham, and (he) called upon the name (be-shem) of the Lord (Gen. 12:8).49Hebrew, va-yikra, be-shem Adonai. People were the ones who were called upon to serve the Lord.50Gen. 12:8 should be understood as follows: Abraham called to people in the Lord’s name; i.e., Abraham called upon people to worship the Lord. The word be-shem (upon the name) is therefore connected51By the cantillical notes. to God’s glorious name. However, this is not the case with and proclaimed the name of the Lord (Ex. 34:5),52Hebrew, va-yikra ve-shem, Adonai. Here the word ve-shem (the name) is not connected by a cantillical note to Adonai (the Lord). In fact, the cantillical notes connect it to va-yikra. for here the Lord is the one who calls.53Ex. 34:5 should be understood as, And the Lord proclaimed the name of the Lord. It is the same case with and will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee.54Its meaning is, I the Lord will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee, for here too ve-shem is connected to Adonai.
