ויעמוד משה. ככה המנהג בכל מחנה שיעמוד במקום אחד כמו שנה לעשות סוכות ולהיות שערים למחנה כי אין צורך לשום יד מחוץ למחנה: THEN MOSES STOOD. It is the practice of all camps that stay in one place for about a year124Israel camped at Sinai for a little less than a year. See Ex. 19:1 and Num. 10:11. to erect booths and have gates.125Hence the camp of Israel had a gate. In such a case, there is no need to set aside a place outside the camp as a latrine.126As required by Deut. 23:13. If the camp had latrines outside its walls, it would make no sense for it to have a gate, for the gate would have to be open at all times so that people could use the latrine at all times. Hence I.E. points out that walled camps would have the latrine within their walls. See I.E. on Ex. 29:45.
מי לה'. יגש אלי. או יקרב. או יבא או יתאסף: WHOSO IS ON THE LORD’S SIDE. Shall draw close to me; shall come near to me; shall come to me or shall gather to me.127Our verse reads, mi la-Adonai elai, which literally means whoso is on the Lord’s side to me. Hence the various interpretations.
בני לוי. שהם ממשפחתו: THE SONS OF LEVI. Who were of Moses’ family.
