ואני. לא יתן רשות או כמו יניח. כמו כי על כן לא נתתיך לנגוע אליה. AND I KNOW THAT THE KING OF EGYPT WILL NOT GIVE YOU. Leave.389The word leave or permission must be added to the text. Our verse literally reads: And I know that the king of Egypt will not give (yitten) you to go. Or the meaning of yitten (give you) is, let, as in Therefore suffered I thee not (netatikha) to touch her (Gen. 20:6).390In this case nothing is missing from the text. Our verse reads: And I know that the king of Egypt will not let (yitten) you go.
ולא בעבור יד החזקה שיש לו. והגאון אמר ולא ביד חזקה בפעם אחת: [EXCEPT BY A MIGHTY HAND.]391The text literally reads: and not by a mighty hand. Hence the two explanations which follow. Neither will he let you go because of his mighty hand.392Pharaoh’s hand is mighty and he therefore sees no reason to let you go. However, Saadiah explains it to mean: neither will he let you go if he is struck once with a mighty hand.393In other words, it will take more than one plague to get Pharaoh to change his mind.
