The middle root letter has been doubled in sharsherot (chains).134The original root of sharsherot is shin, resh, shin. However, the resh was doubled and a new quadriliteral root, shin, resh, shin, resh, formed. The latter is the root of sharsherot. However, the word has the same meaning when the middle root letter is not doubled. Compare, sharshot135The root of sharshot is shin, resh, shin. gavlut (plaited chains) (v. 22). It is very difficult to explain the meaning of gavlut (plaited) in Hebrew.136It has no synonym. According to Sarim, I.E. believes that gavlut, choshen, and some of the other terms used by Scripture in relation to the choshen are not Hebrew words. We consequently do not know their meaning. The same applies to many of the words employed by Scripture that refer to the making of the breastplate as well as to the word choshen (breastplate) itself.
