ויסעו. היה הסמ"ך ראוי להדגש בהתבלע הנו"ן. כמו ויגשו. ויתנו. אולי בא כן להקל על הלשון: AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL JOURNEYED. The samekh in the word va-yisu (journeyed)441From the root nun, samekh, ayin. should have received a dagesh to compensate for the missing nun,442There is no nun in va-yisu. A missing first root letter is compensated for by placing a dagesh in the second stem letter. as the gimel in va-yiggeshu (and drew near)443From the root nun, gimel, shin. In va-yiggeshu the nun drops out and is compensated for by a dagesh in the gimel. (Gen. 44:18) and the tav in va-yittenu (and they gave)444From the root nun, tav, nun. (Gen. 35:4) do. It is possible that the dagesh was omitted to simplify enunciation.
מרעמסס. בפתח תחת הרי"ש ושו"א תחת העי"ן והוא שם מחוז ולא עיר: FROM RAMESES. Rameses is vocalized with a pattach beneath the resh and a sheva beneath the ayin. It is not a city445That is the city of Raamses (Ex. 1:12) which the Israelites built. Both words have the same consonants. However, they differ in vocalization. See I.E. on Ex. 1:11 and Gen. 47:11. but rather the name of a district.446That is, the name of the district where Israel dwelt. See I.E. on Ex. 1:11.
סכתה. אל סכות. TO SUCCOTH. Sukkotah means: to Succoth.447The heh at the end of the word is like a lamed at the beginning of a word; i.e., it means to.
וזכר הגברים ואין צורך להזכיר הנשים. כי הם כמו הם או יותר: [MEN.] Scripture mentions men. There was no need to mention the women because there were as many women as there were men, maybe even more.448Since some of the men had more than one wife.
לבד מטף. שהוא פחות מכ' שנה: BESIDE CHILDREN. Taf (children) refers to those under the age of twenty.449As clearly implied in Num. 14:29, 31.
