(ב) וַתָּ֣מָת שָׂרָ֗ה בְּקִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע הִ֥וא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַיָּבֹא֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִסְפֹּ֥ד לְשָׂרָ֖ה וְלִבְכֹּתָֽהּ׃

(2) And Sarah died in Kiriath Arba—it is Hebron—in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to grieve for Sarah and to weep for her.

(ב) ותמת שרה. אחר שנולדה רבקה הראויה למלאת מקום שרה ושנודע זה לאברהם מתה שרה כאמרם ז''ל "שאין צדיק נפטר מן העולם אלא אם כן נולד צדיק כמותו, שנאמר וזרח השמש ובא השמש."
(ב) לספוד לשרה בשביל שרה ולכבודה. כאמרם ז''ל "הספידא יקרא דשכבי."
(2) And Sarah died: after Rivkah, who was destined to be Sarah’s replacement, had been born. And this was known by Avraham when Sarah died. According to the sages (Yoma 38), a righteous person does not die until a replacement has been born for him, as it is written (Kohelet 1:5), “the sun shines and the sun sets.”
(2) To mourn for Sarah: for Sarah's sake, and to honor her. According to the sages (Sanhedrin 46b),“eulogies are in honor of the deceased.” [rather than to honor the survivors]

מדרש תנחומא א׳:ה׳:ד׳
(ד) אשת חיל עטרת בעלה (משלי יב) זה אברהם שהיה מקונן על שרה מה כתיב למעלה מן הענין ותמת שרה וגו' התחיל אברהם לבכות עליה ולומר אשת חיל מי ימצא בטח בה לב בעלה (שם לא)... ואחרי כן קבר אברהם את שרה:
Complex Midrash Tanchuma, Chayei Sara 4(4) A woman of valor is a crown of her husband (Proverbs 12:4), this is how Abraham lamented over Sarah, what is written above of the matter, "And Sarah died, etc." (23:2) Abraham began to cry over her and say, "A woman of valor, who can find? Her husband puts his trust in her (Proverbs 31:10-11)..."and after that, Abraham buried Sarah." (Genesis 23:19)

(יט) וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן֩ קָבַ֨ר אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־שָׂרָ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ אֶל־מְעָרַ֞ת שְׂדֵ֧ה הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֛ה עַל־פְּנֵ֥י מַמְרֵ֖א הִ֣וא חֶבְר֑וֹן בְּאֶ֖רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃
(19) And after that, Abraham buried Sarah, his wife, in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre—it is Hebron—in the land of Canaan.
