  1. Opening Question: What do you do with money? And, what do you not do with money?

  2. R' Shawn Israel Zevit, Offerings of the Heart, 113-114.

Midrash Rabbah, the classic source of ancient rabbinic homilies and teachings, unfolds this simple metaphor about the flow of giving and receiving, into a more complete and beautiful teaching:

There are two seas in the land of Israel.

One is fresh, and fish are in it.

Splashes of green adorn its bands.

Trees spread their branches over it,

    And stretch their thirsty roots

To sip of its healing waters.

    Along its shores, children play.

The River Jordan makes this sea sparkle

    With water from the hills.

    It laughs in the sunshine.

People build their homes near to it,

    And birds their nests;

And every kind of life is happier

    Because it is there.

The River Jordan also flows south into another sea.

    Here this is no splash

    Of fish, no fluttering leaf,

No song of birds, no children's laughter.

    Travelers choose another route

    Unless on urgent business.

The air hangs heavily above its waters,

And neither person nor beast nor fowl will drink.

What makes this mighty difference in these seas?

    Not the River Jordan.

It empties the same good water into both.

Not the soil in which they lie.

    Not the country round about.

    This is the difference.

    The Sea of Galilee receives

But does not keep the Jordan.

For every drop that flows into it,

    Another drop flows out.

    The giving and receiving

    Go on in equal measure.

The other sea however, is shrewd,

    Hoarding its income jealously.

    It will not be tempted

    Into any generous impulse.

Every drop it gets, it keeps.

    It lets nothing flow out.

The Sea of Galilee gives and lives.

    The other sea gives nothing.

    It is called

    The Dead Sea.

1 The Eternal spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Tell the Israelite people to bring Me gifts; you shall accept gifts for Me from every person whose heart so moves him. 3 And these are the gifts that you shall accept from them: gold, silver, and copper; 4 blue, purple, and crimson yarns, fine linen, goats’ hair; 5 tanned ram skins, dolphin skins, and acacia wood; 6 oil for lighting, spices for the anointing oil and for the aromatic incense; 7 lapis lazuli and other stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece.

11 The Eternal spoke to Moses, saying: 12 When you take a census of the Israelite people according to their enrollment, each shall pay the Eternal a ransom for himself on being enrolled, that no plague may come upon them through their being enrolled. 13 This is what everyone who is entered in the records shall pay: a half-shekel by the sanctuary weight — twenty gerahs to the shekel — a half-shekel as an offering to the Eternal. 14 Everyone who is entered in the records, from the age of twenty years up, shall give the Eternal's offering: 15 the rich shall not pay more and the poor shall not pay less than half a shekel when giving the Eternal's offering as expiation for your persons. 16 You shall take the expiation money from the Israelites and assign it to the service of the Tent of Meeting; it shall serve the Israelites as a reminder before the Eternal's, as expiation for your persons.

11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have assigned it to you for making expiation for your lives upon the altar; it is the blood, as life, that effects expiation.

12 When you have set aside in full the tenth part of your yield — in the third year, the year of the tithe — and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat their fill in your settlements, 13 you shall declare before the Eternal your God: “I have cleared out the consecrated portion from the house; and I have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, just as You commanded me; I have neither transgressed nor neglected any of Your commandments: 14 I have not eaten of it while in mourning, I have not cleared out any of it while I was unclean, and I have not deposited any of it with the dead. I have obeyed the Eternal my God; I have done just as You commanded me. 15 Look down from Your holy abode, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel and the soil You have given us, a land flowing with milk and honey, as You swore to our fathers.”

16 The Eternal your God commands you this day to observe these laws and rules; observe them faithfully with all your heart and soul.

21 And everyone who excelled in ability and everyone whose spirit moved him came, bringing to the Eternal his offering for the work of the Tent of Meeting and for all its service and for the sacral vestments. 22 Men and women, all whose hearts moved them, all who would make an elevation offering of gold to the Eternal, came bringing brooches, earrings, rings, and pendants — gold objects of all kinds. 23 And everyone who had in his possession blue, purple, and crimson yarns, fine linen, goats’ hair, tanned ram skins, and dolphin skins, brought them; 24 everyone who would make gifts of silver or copper brought them as gifts for the Eternal; and everyone who had in his possession acacia wood for any work of the service brought that. 25 And all the skilled women spun with their own hands, and brought what they had spun, in blue, purple, and crimson yarns, and in fine linen. 26 And all the women who excelled in that skill spun the goats’ hair. 27 And the chieftains brought lapis lazuli and other stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece; 28 and spices and oil for lighting, for the anointing oil, and for the aromatic incense. 29 Thus the Israelites, all the men and women whose hearts moved them to bring anything for the work that the Eternal, through Moses, had commanded to be done, brought it as a freewill offering to the Eternal.
