And Moshe ascended to Hashem he said that Israel involved themselves with matters of their encampment and necessities, and Moshe ascended and prepared himself for prophecy
(ד) וילחם עם ישראל ברפידים. אחרים אומרים: אין רפידים אלא רפיון ידים, לפי שרפו ישראל ידיהם מדברי תורה, לכך בא שונא עליהם; לפי שאין השונא בא אלא על רפיון ידים מן התורה...
Refidim indicated a weakening (rifayon) of ones hands, for Israel weakened their hand in Torah...
The Torah is only sustained and exists in a person who 'kills' himself over it, as it says "This is the law regarding a man who dies in a tent"
And he rested in that place. Specifically in that place he lay down to sleep, but for 14 years that he spent in the Beis Midrash of Ever he never lay down to sleep at night, as he was involved in learning Torah.
היינו דאמר רבא: למיימינין בה סמא דחה', למשמאילים בה סמא דמותא
For the 'righties' an elixir of life, for the 'lefties' an elixir of death.
למיימינים - עסוקים בכל כחם וטרודים לדעת סודה כאדם המשתמש ביד ימינו שהיא עיקר:
'righties' -
כיון שעושה אדם את עצמו כמדבר שהוא מופקר לכל תורה ניתנה לו במתנה שנאמר וממדבר מתנה
Since a person makes himself like a desert - in that he is like hefker (ownerless) to all - the Torah is given to him as a present.
וכי מאחר שאלו ואלו דברי אלהים חיים מפני מה זכו ב"ה לקבוע הלכה כמותן? מפני שנוחין ועלובין היו ושונין דבריהן ודברי ב"ש ולא עוד אלא שמקדימין דברי ב"ש לדבריהן
Why did Beis Hillel merit to have the halacha go like him? Because they were calm and patient, and they would teach the words of Beis Shammai, not only this but they would even preface the words of Beis Shammai to their own.
לעולם יהא אדם רך כקנה ואל יהא קשה כארז ולפיכך זכה קנה ליטול הימנה קולמוס לכתוב בו ספר תורה תפילין ומזוזות:
A man should always be gentle (soft/ flexible) as the reed and not hard like a cedar. And for this reason the reed merited that of it should be made a quill for the writing of the Torah scroll, phylacteries and mezuzot.
(יז) בַּרְזֶ֣ל בְּבַרְזֶ֣ל יָ֑חַד וְ֝אִ֗ישׁ יַ֣חַד פְּנֵֽי־רֵעֵֽהוּ׃
(17) (Just as) Iron sharpens iron; So (too) a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
ת"ר הרואה אוכלוסי ישראל אומר ברוך חכם הרזים שאין דעתם דומה זה לזה ואין פרצופיהן דומים זה לזה
..If one sees a multitude of Jews, he says: "Blessed is He who knows secret" for their minds are all unalike, and their faces are unalike.
