How Do The Laws of An Unwitting Murderer Teach Us That Our Shabbat Limit is 2000 Amos?

(29) See that the LORD hath given you the sabbath; therefore He giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.’

(13) And if a man lie not in wait, but God cause it to come to hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he may flee.

(26) But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, whither he fleeth;

(27) and the avenger of blood find him without the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slay the manslayer; there shall be no bloodguiltiness for him;

(5) And ye shall measure without the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the open land about the cities.

Comment: Tractate Eruvin 51a explains the verbal analogy this way: Exodus 16:29 gives us the basic requirement of staying in one's place on Shabbat. The word "place" also appears in Exodus 21:13, regarding an unwitting murderer. That verse contains the word "fleeing," which also links up to "fleeing" in Numbers 35:26. In that verse, we see the word "border," which also appears in Numbers 35:27. That verse contains the word "without," which is also in Numbers 35:5. In that verse, we learn that the measure "without the city" is 2000 amos.
