Shabbat Vayakhel-Pekudei 5777 (Shabbat HaChodesh) Hillel @ Virginia Tech

(3) And Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, on which you went free from Egypt, the house of bondage, how YHWH freed you from it with a mighty hand: no leavened bread shall be eaten. (4) You go free on this day, in the month of Aviv.

(15) You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread—eating unleavened bread for seven days as I have commanded you—at the set time in the month of Aviv, for in it you went forth from Egypt; and none shall appear before Me empty-handed;

(18) You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread—eating unleavened bread for seven days, as I have commanded you—at the set time of the month of Aviv, for in the month of Aviv you went forth from Egypt.

(1) Observe the month of Aviv and offer a passover sacrifice to YHWH your God, for it was in the month of Aviv, at night, that YHWH your God freed you from Egypt.

(2) On the first day of the first month you shall set up the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.

(Reading for Shabbat Vayakhel-Pekudei)

Rabbi Chanina said: on the twenty-fifth of Kislev the work of the tabernacle was completed, but it was left folded up until Nisan, as it is written, "On the day of the first month, on the first of the month, you shall set up the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.” (Exodus 40:2) Israel were murmuring against Moses saying, "why wasn’t it erected immediately, maybe some flaw happened to it?" The Holy One intended to mingle the joy of the tabernacle with the month in which Yitzchak was born, as it says “…knead and make cakes,” (Genesis 18:6) and they said to him “…at the appointed time, I will return to you, at this time next year…” (Genesis 18:14) Now because of this the month of Kislev, in which the work of the tabernacle was completed, lost out. The Holy One said "it is incumbent upon Me to make restitution." What restitution did the Holy One make? The rededication of the Temple by the Hasmoneans; and so too the Holy One will compensate Mar-cheshvan in the future.

(1) YHWH said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: (2) This month shall mark for you the beginning of the months; it shall be the first of the months of the year for you.

18) In the first month, from the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. (19) No leaven shall be found in your houses for seven days. For whoever eats what is leavened, that person shall be cut off from the community of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a citizen of the country. (20) You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your settlements you shall eat unleavened bread.

(Maftir for Shabbat HaChodesh)

(1) And YHWH said to Moses, “to you it shall be the first” (Exodus 12:2) [...] This is referring to the Holy One who is called first, as it says, “I am first and I am last…” (Isaiah 44:6) And Zion is called first, as it says, “As a Throne of Glory, exalted from the beginning, so is the place of our Sanctuary.” (Jeremiah 17:12) And Esau is called first, as it says, “And the first one emerged ruddy…” (Genesis 25:25) The Messiah is called first, as it says, “The first one to Zion, behold, behold them…” (Isaiah 41:27) Let the Holy One, who is called first, come and build the Holy Temple which is called first, and exact retribution from Esau who is called first. And let the Messiah, who is called first, come in the first month, as it says “This month shall be to you the head of the months…” (Exodus 12:2)
