What is Pi?
The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
Π=Circumference/Diameter or C/D

As we learned in a mishna: Ten miracles were performed in the Temple. ...Apparently there were not actually ten miracles performed in the Temple. The Gemara answers: There are two other miracles in the Temple, as it was taught in a baraita: ...The Gemara asks: But are there no more? Has not R. Shemaya of Kalnebo taught that the fragments of earthenware were swallowed up in the very place [where they were broken];...Apparently, there were more than ten miracles in the Temple.

You need to know that the ratio of the circle’s diameter to its circumference is not known and it is never possible to express it precisely. This is not due to a lack in our knowledge, as the sect called Gahalia thinks; but it is in its nature that it is unknow, and there is no way [to know it], but it is known approximately. The geometers have already written essay about this, that is, to know the ratio of the diameter to the circumference approximately, and the proofs for this. This approximation which is accepted by the educated people is the ratio of one to three and one seventh. Every circle who diameter is one handbreadth, has in its circumference three and one seventh handbreadths approximately. As it will never be perceived by approximately, they [the Hebrew sages] too the nearest integer and said that every circle whose circumference is three fists is one fist wide, and they contented themselves with this for their needs in the religious law.
The Halachik Pi
[The gemarah states:] For every circle that has a circumference of 3 amos will have a width of 1 amah, where do we learn this from.” It is surprising to me that the Rabbis felt it necessary to find a source for the ratio (pi) for something that is so obvious to us, a person can just measure it, all he has to do is get something circular with a diameter of 1 amah, and measure the circumference. And it seems to me to explain that since you cannot ever have an exact pi (it’s irrational), the Rabbis need a source for what we may approximate pi as (i.e. 3.1415, 3.1, 3, etc.) So they bring proof from the Torah, the water basin of Solomon’s temple to show they can approximate pi as 3. And this is an approximation, since Solomon’s basin must have been more than 30 amos, the ratio 3 was not an exact ratio.
