Exodus 19-20 (Rebecca)
(Israelites camp at base of Sinai)

(G-d reinforcing covenant with Israelites)
(Moses relays message and people agree to keep G-d's promise)

(G-d in form of cloud & Moses tells Israelites)

(Moses gets instructions from G-d for the Israelites)

(Moses follows G-d's instructions)

- G-d's presence is made, Moses goes up & down mountain & comes up with Aaron and warns the Israelites from touching Mt. Sinai

Skipping Exodus 20:1-15
In the third month after the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. And when they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mount. And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying: ‘Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’wings, and brought you unto Myself. Now therefore, if ye will hearken unto My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be Mine own treasure from among all peoples; for all the earth is Mine; and ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.’ And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the LORD commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said: ‘All that the LORD hath spoken we will do.’ And Moses reported the words of the people unto the LORD. And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and may also believe thee for ever.’ And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD. And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Go unto the people, and sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments, and be ready against the third day; for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying: Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it; whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death; no hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live; when the ram’s horn soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.’ And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their garments. And he said unto the people: ‘Be ready against the third day; come not near a woman.’ And it came to pass on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of a horn exceeding loud; and all the people that were in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. Now mount Sinai was altogether on smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the horn waxed louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice. And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, to the top of the mount; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. And let the priests also, that come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.’ And Moses said unto the LORD: ‘The people cannot come up to mount Sinai; for thou didst charge us, saying: Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.’ And the LORD said unto him: ‘Go, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee; but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest He break forth upon them.’ So Moses went down unto the people, and told them.
Israelites saw God's presence and were terrified of their possible death

Moses said not to fear and moses went up Sinai

G-d tells Moses to not let anyone make idols of gods

G-d tells Moses to make alter to make fire sacrifices to G-d

    1. With what other elements of this story are you familiar? Was there anything you expected to see that wasn’t there? (think about ways you’ve seen this scene depicted in film or books)

I was familiar with the lightning, thunder, dark clouds, and fire as G-d's presence in unique forms. I did not remember or expect that the Israelites would die if they touched the mountain.

    1. The Buddha, Mohammed and Joseph Smith (founder of Mormonism) each inspired or founded a faith based on the claim that G?d had spoken to them personally. In what way is the Torah different, and what implications does this difference have?

The torah is different because the prophets in Judaism, Moses for example, did not begin the religion called Judaism.

    1. Other faiths include pilgrimages to sites where important events have occurred, or sites considered holy. Given the importance of what happens at Sinai, and the claim of holiness of the place in the Torah itself, why do you think pilgrimage to Mt. Sinai has never been an important part

      of Judaism?

I think the location of Mt. Sinai is holy because G-d descended onto the mountain, but I think the pilgrimage to Mt. Sinai is not as an important part because the actions that the Israelites performed at the base of the mountain were not something to be proud of. The Jews went against the first commandment at Mt. Sinai didn't honor G-d's covenant

And all the people perceived the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the voice of the horn, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses: ‘Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.’ And Moses said unto the people: ‘Fear not; for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before you, that ye sin not.’ And the people stood afar off; but Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. And the LORD said unto Moses: Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel: Ye yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. Ye shall not make with Me—gods of silver, or gods of gold, ye shall not make unto you. An altar of earth thou shalt make unto Me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be mentioned I will come unto thee and bless thee. And if thou make Me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast profaned it.
