(1) The levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, shall have no territorial portion with Israel. They shall live only off the Lord’s offerings by fire as their portion, (2) and shall have no portion among their brother tribes: the Lord is their portion, as promised. (3) This then shall be the priests’ due from the people: Everyone who offers a sacrifice, whether an ox or a sheep, must give the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach to the priest. (4) You shall also give him the first fruits of your new grain and wine and oil, and the first shearing of your sheep. (5) For the Lord your God has chosen him and his descendants, out of all your tribes, to be in attendance for service in the name of the Lord for all time. (6) If a Levite would go, from any of the settlements throughout Israel where he has been residing, to the place that God has chosen, he may do so whenever he pleases. (7) He may serve in the name of the Lord his God like all his fellow Levites who are there in attendance before the Lord. (8) They shall receive equal shares of the dues, without regard to personal gifts or patrimonies.
AND IF A LEVITE COME […AND MINISTER] — One might think that Scripture speaks of a “Levite” in the usual sense of the word (i.e. of a לוי and not of a כהן)! Scripture, however, goes on to state, (v. 7) “And he shall minister [in the name of the Lord]”; thus the Levites must be excluded for they are not fit for (not entitled to) service in the Temple (Sifrei Devarim 168:1).

“LEVITICAL PRIESTS”—WHO ARE THEY?

(8) In cases of a skin affection be most careful to do exactly as the levitical priests instruct you. Take care to do as I have commanded them.
(9) Moses wrote down this Teaching and gave it to the priests, sons of Levi, who carried the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, and to all the elders of Israel.
(9) Moses and the levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying: Silence! Hear, O Israel! Today you have become the people of your God (14) The Levites shall then proclaim in a loud voice to all the people of Israel: (15) Cursed be any party who makes a sculptured or molten image, abhorred by the Lord, a craftsman’s handiwork, and sets it up in secret.—And all the people shall respond, Amen.

(26) Moses stood up in the gate of the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come here!” And all the men of Levi rallied to him. … (28) The men of Levi did as Moses had bidden; and some three thousand of the people fell that day. (29) And Moses said, “Dedicate yourselves to the Lord this day—for each of you has been against blood relations—that [God] may bestow a blessing upon you today.”
