Introduction:
Members of the tribe of Reuven had a political rebellion against Moshe.
Important people of all the tribes, including Levi, had a spiritual rebellion against Moshe and Aaron.
Korach is mentioned in connection to both of these rebellions.

(1) Now Korach, son of Izhar son of Kohath son of Levi, took
Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—descendants of Reuben— to rise up against Moses,
Two hundred and fifty Israelites, chieftains of the community, chosen in the assembly, men of repute. They rose against Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! For all the community are holy, all of them, and the LORD is in their midst. Why then do you raise yourselves above the LORD’s congregation?”
(4) When Moses heard this, he fell on his face. (5) Then he spoke to Korah and all his company, saying, “Come morning, the LORD will make known who is His and who is holy, and will grant him access to Himself; He will grant access to the one He has chosen. (6) Do this: You, Korach and all your band, take fire pans, (7) and tomorrow put fire in them and lay incense on them before the LORD. Then the man whom the LORD chooses, he shall be the holy one. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!”
(8) Moses said further to Korach, “Hear me, sons of Levi. (9) Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the community of Israel and given you access to Him, to perform the duties of the LORD’s Tabernacle and to minister to the community and serve them? (10) Now that He has advanced you and all your fellow Levites with you, do you seek the priesthood too? (11) Truly, it is against the LORD that you and all your company have banded together. For who is Aaron that you should rail against him?”
(12) Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab; but they said, “We will not come up! (13) Is it not enough that you brought us from a land flowing with milk and honey to have us die in the wilderness, that you would also lord it over us? (14) Even if you had brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey, and given us possession of fields and vineyards, should you gouge out those men’s eyes? We will not come up!”
(23) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (24) “Speak to the community and say: Withdraw from about the משכן Mishkan of Korach, Dathan, and Abiram.” (25) Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, the elders of Israel following him. (26) He addressed the community, saying, “Move away from the Mishkan of these wicked men and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest you be wiped out for all their sins.” (27) So they withdrew from about the Mishkan of Korach, Dathan, and Abiram. Now Dathan and Abiram had come out and they stood at the entrance of their tents, with their wives, their children, and their little ones.
Four Questions on the parsha:
1/What prompted these rebellions to occur at this time?
2/What were the motivating factors behind these rebellions?
3/Why did the people of Israel blame Moshe and Aaron after Korach and his group of men died through a clear divine punishment?
4/What is the connection with these rebellions and the laws taught at the end of the parsha?
Question #1/What prompted these rebellions to occur at this time?
According to the Ibn Ezra, Parashat Korach happened after the Levites were officially chosen instead of the first born to represent the nation in the Tabernancle.
According to the Ramban (Nachmanidies), the rebellions occurred because of the punishment of 40 years in the desert.
Question #2/What were the motivating factors behind these rebellions?
To further understand the rebellions, we need to understand the difference between the first born, the Levi and the Cohen. To understand this, let us look at the different ways to give a gift to Hashem, according to the Torah, and what relationship they build between the people and Hashem.
The three types of giving to Hashem are mentioned throughout the Torah: The first of an item , tithes and terumah (lifting) (The korbanot (offerings) can be understood in the context of these three types of giving to Hashem). They each express a worthy relationship between the people and Hashem:
Gift #1: The gifts of the "first" express our relationship with Hashem as servants to a master, i.e. that we owe Hashem everything.
(1) When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you as a heritage, and you possess it and settle in it, (2) you shall take some of every first fruit of the soil, which you brought from the land that the LORD your God is giving you, put it in a basket and go to the place where the LORD your God will choose to establish His name. (3) You shall go to the priest in charge at that time and say to him, “I acknowledge this day before the LORD your God that I have entered the land that the LORD swore to our fathers to assign us.” (4) The priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down in front of the altar of the LORD your God. (5) You shall then recite as follows before the LORD your God: “My father was a fugitive Aramean. He went down to Egypt with meager numbers and sojourned there; but there he became a great and very populous nation. (6) The Egyptians dealt harshly with us and oppressed us; they imposed heavy labor upon us. (7) We cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our plea and saw our plight, our misery, and our oppression. (8) The LORD freed us from Egypt by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm and awesome power, and by signs and portents. (9) He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. (10) Wherefore I now bring the first fruits of the soil which You, O LORD, have given me.” You shall leave it before the LORD your God and bow low before the LORD your God.
We need to sanctify the first product of the items and then it is our job to bring it to Hashem (not give it to Hashem, because it is already His). After doing this symbolic action that expresses all of the product belongs to Hashem, we are then permitted to partake of the rest.
(19) You shall consecrate to the LORD your God all male firstlings that are born in your herd and in your flock: you must not work your firstling ox or shear your firstling sheep.
(13) The first fruits of everything in their land, that they bring to the LORD, shall be yours; everyone of your household who is clean may eat them.
Gift #2: Tithes express our relationship to Hashem as a spouse, i.e. a partner
(18) And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was a priest of God Most High. (19) He blessed him, saying, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. (20) And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your foes into your hand.” And he gave him a tenth of everything.

The tithes need to be given to Hashem- they are not sanctified and not automatically divine- or given to Hashem wishes to give it.

(22) You shall set aside every year a tenth part of all the yield of your sowing that is brought from the field. (23) You shall consume the tithes of your new grain and wine and oil, and the firstlings of your herds and flocks, in the presence of the LORD your God, in the place where He will choose to establish His name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God forever. (24) Should the distance be too great for you, should you be unable to transport them, because the place where the LORD your God has chosen to establish His name is far from you and because the LORD your God has blessed you, (25) you may give them into money. Wrap up the money and take it with you to the place that the LORD your God has chosen, (26) and give the money on anything you want—cattle, sheep, wine, or other intoxicant, or anything you may desire. And you shall feast there, in the presence of the LORD your God, and rejoice with your household. (27) But do not neglect the Levite in your community, for he has no hereditary portion as you have.
(12) When you have set aside in full the tenth part of your yield—in the third year, the year of the tithe—and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat their fill in your settlements, (13) you shall declare before the LORD your God: “I have cleared out the consecrated portion from the house; and I have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, just as You commanded me; I have neither transgressed nor neglected any of Your commandments:
תרומה מביעה את אהבת אדם לה' על ידי נתינת דברים הכי טוב לה'
Gift #3: Terumah (liftings)-giving the best of our products- expresses our relationship with Hashem as children to a parent, i.e. acknowledging his providing for us due to his love for us.
(11) This, too, shall be yours: the gift offerings of their contributions, all the elevation offerings of the Israelites, I give to you, to your sons, and to the daughters that are with you, as a due for all time; everyone of your household who is clean may eat it. (12) All the best of the new oil, wine, and grain—the choice parts that they present to the LORD—I give to you.
The best items are already sanctified to Hashem (because it is His from the start). We need to lift it up, showing it belongs to Hashem. This demonstrates our acknowledgement that the food is from him.
(29) You shall lift up all gifts due to the LORD from everything that is donated to you, from each thing its best portion, the part thereof that is to be consecrated.
There is a connections between the types of gifts, the relationship they demonstrate, and the three types of people who were selected to work in the Tabernacle.
Sanctifying the first born sons represents that we owe everything we have to Hashem, like a servant to a master.
(13) For every first-born is Mine: at the time that I smote every first-born in the land of Egypt, I consecrated every first-born in Israel, man and beast, to Myself, to be Mine, the LORD’s.
Appointing the Levites symbolizes the partnership that the Nation of Israel has with Hashem.
(6) I hereby take your fellow Levites from among the Israelites; they are given to you in as a gift to Hashem, to do the work of the Tent of Meeting.
The Cohanim are the selected ones who Hashem chose to receive the gifts that the people of Israel lifted from their food to show that it is Hashem's food they are eating. Since the Cohanim are receiving sanctified gifts, they are also sanctified.
(30) You shall also anoint Aaron and his sons, consecrating them to serve Me as priests.
The Levi'im were chosen when the mistake of the golden calf demonstrated that we have a need to be partners with God-and the Levi'im demonstrated their willingness to be partners by their actions.

(26) Moses stood up in the gate of the camp and said, “Whoever is for the LORD, come here!” And all the Levites rallied to him. (27) He said to them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Each of you put sword on thigh, go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay brother, neighbor, and kin.” (28) The Levites did as Moses had bidden; and some three thousand of the people fell that day. (29) And Moses said, “Dedicate yourselves to the LORD this day—for each of you has been against son and brother—that He may bestow a blessing upon you today.”
The Cohanim were chosen earlier, independent of any actions they took, to be spiritual leaders. The same is true with Moshe, being chosen to lead the nation, not because of specific actions, rather that is whom Hashem decided to make a leader.
Based on the difference of a first born, a levi and a cohen, we can better understand the motivation of the rebellion:
Once the Levi model replaced the first born model, the people were able to be swayed to rebel.
According to the Ibn Ezra, the rebellions occurred immediately after the Levites were chosen. This is because the Levi model that stressed partnership. The people now wanted to be part of the decisions who would be the political leader and who would be the cohanim.
According to the Ramban, the rebellions occurred upon the failure of not entering the land of Israel. This is because the Levi model (which they received a few months earlier) stressed actions. The people blamed their leaders for the punishment that they received due to their lack of leadership/spirituality. Perhaps this stress on action caused them to doubt the divine leadership of Moshe and Aaron, since their (apparent) lack of action caused the people to be punished.
The people took the model of the partner/action too far, ignoring that our relationship with Hashem is not exclusively based on this model. It has to be combined with the models of master-servant and parent-child.
Question #3/ Why did the people continue rebelling after Korach and his followers died of divine punishment?
After the rebels die supernatural deaths, proving that Hashem did choose Moshe and Arron, the people are not mollified.
The people are saying" It doesn't matter if Hashem chose you, if you are not doing your jobs correctly!"- Actions are more important than choice as demonstrated either by the official switching of the Levites (as Ibn Eza wrote) or the lack of leadership/spirituality that led to a 40 years punishment the people received (as Ramban wrote).
Rebuttal to this claim: Moshe proves his leadership ability and Aaron proves his spiritual ability.
Even after proving the worthiness of Moshe and Aaron, Hashem wants the people to understand that the partnership model is not the only one that should be used to base a relationship with Him. The people need to also accept the child-parent relationship, meaning that Hashem can choose due to pure love. He therefore shows the people this, by way of choosing Aron's name on the staff of Levi.
The people are more upset than before.
The people now think (after the witnessing of Aaron's staff blossoming-and not of the other tribes) "If our actions don't count, then we will not survive Hashem's unexplained judgments." The people feel they lost the partnership they had with Hashem, and this will once again bring them to destruction (like the first born period did), due to its one sided relationship that can not be explained in a logical manner.
Hashem explains that he has chosen the Cohanim - but the Levi'im will accompany them in the service of Hashem. Since the Levi'im are the representatives of the people, there is still a partnership between Hashem and the nation. Together with this, Hashem reiterates that He has the right to choose whom He wants to be the uplifted and honored in the nation.
(1) The LORD said to Aaron: You and your sons and the ancestral house under your charge shall bear any guilt connected with the sanctuary; you and your sons alone shall bear any guilt connected with your priesthood.
(2) You shall also associate with yourself your kinsmen the tribe of Levi, your ancestral tribe, to be attached to you and to minister to you, while you and your sons under your charge are before the Tent of the Pact. (3) They shall discharge their duties to you and to the Tent as a whole, but they must not have any contact with the furnishings of the Shrine or with the altar, lest both they and you die. (4) They shall be attached to you and discharge the duties of the Tent of Meeting, all the service of the Tent; but no outsider shall intrude upon you (5) as you discharge the duties connected with the Shrine and the altar, that wrath may not again strike the Israelites. (6) I hereby take your fellow Levites from among the Israelites; they are assigned to you in dedication to the LORD, to do the work of the Tent of Meeting; (7) while you and your sons shall be careful to perform your priestly duties in everything pertaining to the altar and to what is behind the curtain. I make your priesthood a service of dedication; any outsider who encroaches shall be put to death.
Question #4/ What is the connection between the laws at the end of the parsha with the events in the parsha?
Hashem teaches laws stating that some items are sanctified (expressing our parent-child relationship) and the nation should give these items to the Cohanim. Other items should be taken as a tithe from the objects (expressing our partnership relationship) and these items should be given to the Levites.
These laws shows that both models continue to exist: unconditional love, as well as logical guidelines of action for the nation to follow to receive Hashem's blessing.

(19) All the sacred gifts that the Israelites set aside for the LORD I give to you, to your sons, and to the daughters that are with you, as a due for all time. It shall be an everlasting covenant of salt before the LORD for you and for your offspring as well. (20) And the LORD said to Aaron: You shall, however, have no territorial share among them or own any portion in their midst; I am your portion and your share among the Israelites.
(21) And to the Levites I hereby give all the tithes in Israel as their share in return for the services that they perform, the services of the Tent of Meeting. (22) Henceforth, Israelites shall not trespass on the Tent of Meeting, and thus incur guilt and die: (23) only Levites shall perform the services of the Tent of Meeting; others would incur guilt. It is the law for all time throughout the ages. But they shall have no territorial share among the Israelites; (24) for it is the tithes set aside by the Israelites as a gift to the LORD that I give to the Levites as their share. Therefore I have said concerning them: They shall have no territorial share among the Israelites.
Postscript #1: Parshat Korach can help us understand the story of Cain and Abel.
Cain gave to Hashem out of a feeling of partnership (as his name dictates).
Abel gave to Hashem out of a feeling of unworthiness (as his name dictates) and receiving items from his father in heaven (perhaps because he was neglected by his parents).
Just as in the Korach rebellion, Hashem says a feeling of partnership without servant or child is not fitting (indeed, it led Cain to feeling he can take life away, just as Hashem could give it).
(1) Now the man knew his wife Eve,
and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gained a male child with the help of the LORD.”
(2) She then bore his brother Abel. (No explanation!)
Abel became a keeper of sheep,
and Cain became a tiller of the soil.
(3) In the end of the season, Cain brought a gift to the LORD from the fruit of the soil;
(4) and Abel, too, brought the firstlings and choicest of his flock.
The LORD paid heed to Abel and his offering, (5)
but to Cain and his offering He paid no heed.
Cain was much distressed and his face fell.
Post script #2: The third model of relationship- of Master and Servant-is also mentioned in law- the sanctity of the first born man and animal. However, it is only reintroduced in the context of the Temple service by King David. Perhaps this is because KING David needed to stress to the people and himself that there is a greater king above Israel- Hashem.
