Now Korah, son of Izhar son of Kohath son of Levi, betook himself, along with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—descendants of Reuben— to rise up against Moses, together with two hundred and fifty Israelites, chieftains of the community, chosen in the assembly, men of repute. They combined against Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! For all the community are holy, all of them, and Hashem is in their midst. Why then do you raise yourselves above Hashem’s congregation?”
— And what induced Korah to quarrel with Moses? He was envious of the princely dignity held by Elzaphan the son of Uziel (Midrash Tanchuma, Korach 1) whom Moses had appointed prince over the sons of Kohath although this was by the express command of God (Numbers 3:30). Korah argued thus: “My father and his brothers were four in number — as it is said, (Exodus 6:18) “and the sons of Kohath were [Amram and Izhar and Hebron and Uziel]”. — “As to Amram, the eldest, his two sons have themselves assumed high dignity, one as king and the other as High Priest; who is entitled to receive the second (the rank next to it)? Is it not “I” who am the son of Izhar, who was the second to Amram amongst the brothers? And yet he has appointed as prince the son of his (Amram’s) brother who was the youngest of all of them! I hereby protest against him and will undo his decision”. —
When Moses heard this, he fell on his face. Then he spoke to Korah and all his company, saying, “Come morning, Hashem will make known who is His and who is holy, and will grant him access to Himself; He will grant access to the one He has chosen.
...A Midrashic explanation of the word בקר (instead of the more usual מחר) is the following: Moses said to him (Korah): “The Holy One, blessed be He, has assigned bounds in His world; can you, perhaps, change the morning into evening? Just as little, will you be able to make this (Aaron’s appointment as High Priest) of none effect, — as indeed it states, (Genesis 1:5) “and it was evening and it was morning… (Genesis 1:4) “and God separated (ויבדל) [light from darkness]”; and in the same sense (that the separation should be of a permanent character) it states, (I Chronicles 23:13) “and Aaron was separated (ויבדל) that he should be sanctified [as most holy … to minister unto him]” (Midrash Tanchuma, Korach 5).

The king has the right to execute anyone who rebels against a king. One is liable to the death penalty even if the king decreed that he is to go to a particular place and he did not go there or that he not leave his house and left. If he so wishes, he may execute him it says, “any man who disagrees with your words” (Joshua 1:18).

Similarly, within each generation we find the same disparity among neshamot: there are those who are the “heads (the leaders) of the multitudes of Israel,” so designated because their souls are in the category of “head” and “brain” in comparison with those of the masses and the ignorant.
...for the nurture and life-force of the nefesh, ruach, and neshamah of the ignorant are drawn from the nefesh, ruach, and neshamah of the righteous and the sages, the “heads” of Israel in their generation.
By drawing their nurture and life from those who represent the levels of “head” and “brain,” all Jews are bound up with their source in chochmah ilaah—supernal wisdom.
This explains the comment of our Sages on the verse, “And cleave unto Him" (concerning which the question arises: How can mortal man cleave to G‑d? In answer, our Sages comment): “He who cleaves unto a [Torah] scholar is deemed by the Torah to have actually become attached to the Shechinah (the Divine Presence).”This seems difficult to comprehend: How can one equate cleaving to a Torah scholar with cleaving to the Shechinah? However, in light of the above, this is readily understood. For, through attachment to the scholars, the nefesh, ruach, and neshamah of the ignorant are bound up and united with their original essence and their root in supernal wisdom,
...As for those who willfully sin and rebel against the Torah sages: How do they receive their spiritual nurture and life? Spiritual life and nurture flow only where there is a desire to nurture and give life. In answer to this, the text continues:
[the nurture of their nefesh, ruach, and neshamah comes from the hind-part, as it were, of the nefesh, ruach, and neshamah of the scholars.)

Rav Giddel said that Rav said: Any Torah scholar who sits before his teacher and his lips are not dripping with myrrh due to fear of his teacher, those lips shall be burnt, as it is stated: “His lips are as lilies, dripping with flowing myrrh [shoshanim notefot mor over]” (Song of Songs 5:13)? He interpreted homiletically: Do not read mor over, flowing myrrh; rather, read mar over, flowing bitterness. Likewise, do not read shoshanim, lilies; rather, read sheshonim, that are studying, meaning that lips that are studying Torah must be full of bitterness.

There descend, in every generation, sparks from the soul of our teacher Moses, peace unto him, and they clothe themselves in the body and soul of the sages of that generation, the “eyes” of the congregation.
These sparks which are clothed in sages and spiritual leaders enable them—
to impart knowledge to the people that they may know the greatness of G‑d and [hence] serve Him with heart and soul.
