Ruth begins with setting the time in which it took place which is during the days of the judges or shoftim (שופטים). Shoftim is the name of the 7th book of the Tanakh.
וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵי֙ מ֣וֹת יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וַֽיִּשְׁאֲלוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בַּיהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר מִ֣י יַעֲלֶה־לָּ֧נוּ אֶל־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י בַּתְּחִלָּ֖ה לְהִלָּ֥חֶם בּֽוֹ׃
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, “Which of us shall be the first to go up against the Canaanites and attack them?”

Returning to our story, after the death of Naomi's sons, she decides to return home to Israel. She tells her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah, to stay in their home country of Moab.
