The Beautiful Agony of the Psalms
(7) I am weary with groaning; every night I drench my bed, I melt my couch in tears.

(2) My God, my God, why have You abandoned me; why so far from bringing my salvation and from my anguished roaring?

(1) For the conductor. A psalm of David.

(2) How long, Eternal One? Will You forget me for eternity?

How long will You hide Your face from me?

(3) How long will I have schemes for myself, with grief in my heart all day long?

How long will my enemy rise up over me?

(4) Look at me, answer me, Eternal, my God!

Bring light to my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

(5) Lest my enemy say, “I have overcome him,”

and my foes rejoice when I break down.

(6) But I have trusted in Your kindness,

my heart will rejoice in Your salvation.

I will sing to the Eternal,

for the Eternal has been good to me.

(16) The Eternal said to Moses: You are soon to lie with your fathers. This people will then go astray after the alien gods in their midst, in the land that they are about to enter; they will forsake Me and break My covenant that I made with them. (17) Then My anger will flare up against them, and I will abandon them and hide My face from them. They shall be ready prey; and many evils and troubles shall befall them. And they shall say on that day, “Surely it is because our God is not in our midst that these evils have befallen us.” (18) Yet I will keep My face hidden on that day, because of all the evil they have done in turning to other gods.
