(א) אָ֣ז יָשִֽׁיר־מֹשֶׁה֩ וּבְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־הַשִּׁירָ֤ה הַזֹּאת֙ לַֽה' וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ לֵאמֹ֑ר אָשִׁ֤ירָה לַֽה' כִּֽי־גָאֹ֣ה גָּאָ֔ה ס֥וּס וְרֹכְב֖וֹ רָמָ֥ה בַיָּֽם

(1) Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spoke, saying: I will sing unto the LORD, for He is highly exalted; The horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea. (2) The LORD is my strength and song, And He is become my salvation; This is my God, and I will glorify Him; My father’s God, and I will exalt Him. (3) The LORD is a man of war, The LORD is His name. (4) Pharaoh’s chariots and his host hath He cast into the sea, And his chosen captains are sunk in the Red Sea. (5) The deeps cover them— They went down into the depths like a stone. (6) Thy right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, Thy right hand, O LORD, dasheth in pieces the enemy. (7) And in the greatness of Thine excellency Thou overthrowest them that rise up against Thee; Thou sendest forth Thy wrath, it consumeth them as stubble. (8) And with the blast of Thy nostrils the waters were piled up— The floods stood upright as a heap; The deeps were congealed in the heart of the sea. (9) The enemy said: ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; My lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.’ (10) Thou didst blow with Thy wind, the sea covered them; They sank as lead in the mighty waters. (11) Who is like unto Thee, O LORD, among the mighty? Who is like unto Thee, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders? (12) Thou stretchedst out Thy right hand— The earth swallowed them. (13) Thou in Thy love hast led the people that Thou hast redeemed; Thou hast guided them in Thy strength to Thy holy habitation. (14) The peoples have heard, they tremble; Pangs have taken hold on the inhabitants of Philistia. (15) Then were the chiefs of Edom affrighted; The mighty men of Moab, trembling taketh hold upon them; All the inhabitants of Canaan are melted away. (16) Terror and dread falleth upon them; By the greatness of Thine arm they are as still as a stone; Till Thy people pass over, O LORD, Till the people pass over that Thou hast gotten. (17) Thou bringest them in, and plantest them in the mountain of Thine inheritance, The place, O LORD, which Thou hast made for Thee to dwell in, The sanctuary, O Lord, which Thy hands have established. (18) The LORD shall reign for ever and ever. (19) For the horses of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought back the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel walked on dry land in the midst of the sea. (20) And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. (21) And Miriam sang unto them: Sing ye to the LORD, for He is highly exalted: The horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea. (22) And Moses led Israel onward from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. (23) And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. (24) And the people murmured against Moses, saying: ‘What shall we drink?’ (25) And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD showed him a tree, and he cast it into the waters, and the waters were made sweet. There He made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there He proved them; (26) and He said: ‘If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in His eyes, and wilt give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon thee, which I have put upon the Egyptians; for I am the LORD that healeth thee.’ (27) And they came to Elim, where were twelve springs of water, and three score and ten palm-trees; and they encamped there by the waters.

(א) וַתָּ֣שַׁר דְּבוֹרָ֔ה וּבָרָ֖ק בֶּן־אֲבִינֹ֑עַם בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא לֵאמֹֽר
(ב) בִּפְרֹ֤עַ פְּרָעוֹת֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּהִתְנַדֵּ֖ב עָ֑ם בָּרֲכ֖וּ ה'

(4) LORD, when Thou didst go forth out of Seir, When Thou didst march out of the field of Edom, The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, Yea, the clouds dropped water. (5) The mountains quaked at the presence of the LORD, Even yon Sinai at the presence of the LORD, the God of Israel. (6) In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways ceased, And the travellers walked through byways. (7) The rulers ceased in Israel, they ceased, Until that thou didst arise, Deborah, That thou didst arise a mother in Israel. . (8) They chose new gods; Then was war in the gates; Was there a shield or spear seen Among forty thousand in Israel? (9) My heart is toward the governors of Israel, That offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye the LORD. (10) Ye that ride on white asses, Ye that sit on rich cloths, And ye that walk by the way, tell of it; (11) Louder than the voice of archers, by the watering-troughs! There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, Even the righteous acts of His rulers in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates. (12) Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, utter a song; Arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam. (13) Then made He a remnant to have dominion over the nobles and the people; The LORD made me have dominion over the mighty. (14) Out of Ephraim came they whose root is in Amalek; After thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; Out of Machir came down governors, And out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal’s staff. (15) And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; As was Issachar, so was Barak; Into the valley they rushed forth at his feet. Among the divisions of Reuben There were great resolves of heart. (16) Why sattest thou among the sheep-folds, To hear the pipings for the flocks? At the divisions of Reuben There were great searchings of heart. (17) Gilead abode beyond the Jordan; And Dan, why doth he sojourn by the ships? Asher dwelt at the shore of the sea, And abideth by its bays. (18) Zebulun is a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death, And Naphtali, upon the high places of the field. (19) The kings came, they fought; Then fought the kings of Canaan, In Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; They took no gain of money. (20) They fought from heaven, The stars in their courses fought against Sisera. (21) The brook Kishon swept them away, That ancient brook, the brook Kishon. O my soul, tread them down with strength. (22) Then did the horsehoofs stamp By reason of the prancings, the prancings of their mighty ones. (23) ’Curse ye Meroz’, said the angel of the LORD, ‘Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, Because they came not to the help of the LORD, To the help of the LORD against the mighty.’ (24) Blessed above women shall Jael be, The wife of Heber the Kenite, Above women in the tent shall she be blessed. (25) Water he asked, milk she gave him; In a lordly bowl she brought him curd. (26) Her hand she put to the tent-pin, And her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; And with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote through his head, Yea, she pierced and struck through his temples. (27) At her feet he sunk, he fell, he lay; At her feet he sunk, he fell; Where he sunk, there he fell down dead. (28) Through the window she looked forth, and peered, The mother of Sisera, through the lattice: ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots? (29) The wisest of her princesses answer her, Yea, she returneth answer to herself: (30) ’Are they not finding, are they not dividing the spoil? A damsel, two damsels to every man; To Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, A spoil of dyed garments of embroidery, Two dyed garments of broidery for the neck of every spoiler?’ (31) So perish all Thine enemies, O LORD; But they that love Him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

The point of singing Shira is to give tangible expression to our joy at being miraculously saved by God. When we truly experience this joy, it acts as a powerful catalyst to draw us closer to God, and this in turn can bring about our Geulah. Chizkiah here, by failing to sing, halted the Geulah
