(ז) יש נוהגין לתת חטין בשבת שירה לפני העופות ואינו נכון שהרי אין מזונתן עליך.
Some have a practice to give wheat to birds on Shabbat Shira, and it is not correct, for they are not dependent on people for food.
יש מתרעמים על מה שהמנהג בשבת שירה לזרוק חטין לפני העופות, והרי אין מזונותן עליך.
אבל נראה לי דמנהג ישראל תורה, שהרי אין אנו טורחים בשבילם אלא בשבילנו, דמרגלא בפי ההמון שהעופות אמרו שירה על הים
ולכן אנו מחזיקין להם טובה, ואם כן הכוונה כדי לזכור שמחת שירת הים, ולית לן בה
ויש מי שכתב כיון דכונתינו לשם מצוה - מותר.
There are those who challenge the practice of throwing wheat to birds on Shabbat Shira, for behold, they are not dependent on people for food.
Nonetheless, it appears to me that the custom of Israel is like Torah [and therefore acceptable]. For behold, we are not working for them, rather, we are doing it for ourselves. For there is a well known idea that the birds sang praise at the splitting of the sea.
Therefore, we are expressing gratitude to them, and our intention is to remember the happiness of the Song of the Sea. Accordingly, there is no prohibition.
There is also one who writes that since we intend to perform a mitzva, then it is permitted.
