Mishnah Mondays #2

(3) Beit Shammai say: in the evening every person should recline and recite [the Shema], and in the morning they should stand, as it says, “When you lie down and when you get up” (Deuteronomy 6:7).

Beit Hillel say that every person should recite in their own way, as it says, “And as you walk on the way” (Deuteronomy 6:7). Why then does it say, “When you lie down and when you get up"? At the time when people lie down and at the time when people rise up.

Rabbi Tarfon said: I was once on the way somewhere and I reclined to recite the Shema according to the words of Bet Shammai, and I put myself into danger from robbers.

They said to him: you would have deserved to come to harm, because you acted against the words of Beit Hillel.

(4) Hear, O Israel! The Eternal is our God, the Eternal is One. (5) You shall love the Eternal your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (6) Take to heart these instructions with which I charge you this day. (7) Impress them upon your children. Recite them when you stay at home and as you walk on the way, when you lie down and when you get up. (8) Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on between your eyes; (9) inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
