I. EVOKATIVE LANGUAGE: Many examples (just a few select ones listed below) of deliberate, parallel language meant to illustrate how Jews have chosen:
1) Shushan over Yerushalayim
2) Achashveirosh palace over Beit Hamikdahsh
3) How far things unravel when comparing king to king
Parallel language meant to evoke rooted rituals of the Mishkan
(15) You shall make a breastpiece of decision, worked into a design; make it in the style of the ephod: make it of gold, of blue, purple, and crimson yarns, and of fine twisted linen.
(4) For no fewer than a hundred and eighty days he displayed the vast riches of his kingdom and the splendid glory of his majesty. (5) At the end of this period, the king gave a banquet for seven days in the court of the king’s palace garden for all the people who lived in the fortress Shushan, high and low alike. (6) [There were hangings of] white cotton and blue wool, caught up by cords of fine linen and purple wool to silver rods and alabaster columns; and there were couches of gold and silver on a pavement of marble, alabaster, mother-of-pearl, and mosaics.
The Throne Room
And in the 3rd year.... two polar opposite experiences...
(3) in the third year of his reign, he gave a banquet for all the officials and courtiers—the administration of Persia and Media, the nobles and the governors of the provinces in his service.
II. Vulnerability, Amalek, & the Pur
(not literal translation!)
We must believe in His glory and providence even without revealed miracles. When the honeymoon is over, and there are no more plagues and splitting of seas and mountain revelations, and when the day in, day out challenges of the new reality set in, then do we believe?
It was because of this wavering and this questioning that we were susceptible to Amalek's immediate attack.
Amelek represents Pur - they "happened" upon us / juxtaposed to our Hashgacha after Matan Torah... Amalek is amoral, there are never any Gods or rituals mentioned in conjunction with them, (as there are for the other nations like Moav, Edom, Amon, Plishtim, Bavel, Ashur, Edom, etc.)
(far from a literal translation)
Amalek specifically resented our Providence, especially after the apex of Matan Torah. Their "happening" upon us symbollizes a clash of deliberate versus random.
III. Top line - Evolution of Esther
All initial descriptions of Esther are passive ones, ones where she was a victim of circumstance. She is an orphan, she is taken in by Mordechai, she is beautiful, she is taken by Mordechai, she does that which Mordechai commands of her. Even when she is in the palace, Mordechai is initially pulling the strings. The texts offers nothing up as to her emotions or pov.
Until the tide begins to turn, and we see Esther not following Mordechai's instructions. Ultimately, he will do that which she commands of him, and he will rise to power on her coat tails. We will now see active verbs being used as she takes control.
