(א)ארבעה דברים נאמרו בשבת שנים מן התורה ושנים מדברי סופרים והן מפורשין על ידי הנביאים. שבתורה זכור ושמור. ושנתפרשו על ידי הנביאים כבוד ועונג שנאמר וקראת לשבת עונג ולקדוש ה' מכובד.
There are four aspects of the observance of Shabbat: Two originating in the Torah and two from our Sages via the prophets: In the Torah, they are: "Remember the Sabbath Day" and "Observe the Sabbath Day." In the prophets they are honor and pleasure, as it is written in the book of Isaiah (58:13): "And you shall call the Sabbath a delight, sanctified unto God and honored."
(יב) כַּבֵּד אֶת אָבִיךָ וְאֶת אִמֶּךָ לְמַעַן יַאֲרִכוּן יָמֶיךָ עַל הָאֲדָמָה
(12) Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land
(א) למען יאריכון ימיך. אם תכבד יאריכון, ואם לאו יקצרון
If you honor your parents, your days will be lengthened-if not, they will be shortened.
רבי טרפון הוה ליה ההיא אמא דכל אימת דהות בעיא למיסק לפוריא גחין וסליק לה וכל אימת דהות נחית נחתת עלויה
Rabbi Tarfon had an elderly mother whom he treated with such respect, that whenever she wanted to climb into bed, he would bend down and she would climb on him into it, and whenever she got down from the bed, she would climb down on him.
(ג) אי זהו כבוד מאכיל ומשקה מלביש ומכסה משל האב ואם אין ממון לאב ויש ממון לבן כופין אותו וזן אביו ואמו כפי מה שהוא יכול ומוציא ומכניס ומשמשו בשאר הדברים שהשמשים משמשים בהן את הרב ועומד מפניו כדרך שהוא עומד מפני רבו.
What is meant by honoring them? One should bring them food and drink, clothe them and cover them from their resources. If a father does not have financial resources and a son does, the son is compelled to sustain his father and his mother according to his capacity. He should bring him out and bring him home and serve him in all the ways one serves a teacher. Similarly, he should stand before him as one stands before a teacher.
(ב) איזהו כבוד זה שאמרו חכמים שמצוה על אדם לרחוץ פניו ידיו ורגליו בחמין בערב שבת מפני כבוד השבת
What is meant by honor? This refers to our Sages' statement that it is a mitzvah for a person to wash his face, his hands, and his feet in hot water in honor of the Sabbath.
רבי חנינא מיעטף וקאי אפניא דמעלי שבתא אמר בואו ונצא לקראת שבת המלכה רבי ינאי לביש מאניה מעלי שבת ואמר בואי כלה בואי כלה
(1) Rabbi Channina would wrap himself (in a nice cloak) and stands towards evening on Friday and say, "Come, let us go out and greet the Sabbath Queen. Rabbi Yannai would put on his (Shabbat) clothes on Friday and say "Come, O Bride, Come, O Bride."
(ה) מסדר אדם שולחנו בערב שבת ואף על פי שאינו צריך אלא לכזית...וצריך לתקן ביתו מבעוד יום מפני כבוד השבת. ויהיה נר דלוק ושולחן ערוך לאכול ומטה מוצעת שכל אלו לכבוד שבת הן.
(5) A person should prepare his table on Friday, even if he is to eat the amount of food equal to an olive...One should prepare one's house while it is still day as an expression of respect for the Sabbath. There should be a lamp burning, a table prepared with food to eat, and a bed already made. All of these are ways to honor the Sabbath.
תניא ר' יוסי בר יהודה אומר שני מלאכי השרת מלוין לו לאדם בע"ש מבית הכנסת לביתו אחד טוב ואחד רע וכשבא לביתו ומצא נר דלוק ושלחן ערוך ומטתו מוצעת מלאך טוב אומר יהי רצון שתהא לשבת אחרת כך ומלאך רע עונה אמן בעל כרחו ואם לאו מלאך רע אומר יהי רצון שתהא לשבת אחרת כך ומלאך טוב עונה אמן בעל כרחו
(1) A Baraisa (Talmudic Text) taught: Rabbi Yose son of Yehudah says: Two ministering angels escort a person from the Synagogue to his (her) home on the eve of the Sabbath, one a good angel and one a bad angel. And when he comes to his home and finds the lamp burning, the table set, and his bed made, the good angel says, "May it be the will of God that it should be this way the next Sabbath as well." And the Bad Angel is forced to answer Amen against his will. But if the table is not set, the Bad Angel says "May it be the will of God that is should be THIS way the next Sabbath as well." And the Good Angel is forced to say Amen against his will.
