GrowTorah Core Value: Incubating Emunah
Korach's wealth leads him to challenge Moshe's authority, thinking himself equal to Moshe. His punishment is a miraculous earthquake, pulling everything that was his "down to Earth". To further prove Moshe and Aaron's authority, God has every tribe leader present their staff, and will show his choice by making the staff miraculously produce almond blossoms. What do these miraculous interventions represent about nature and about us? How do we bring these characteristics into our garden?
Lesson Title: Down to Earth
As it is said: Because God judges who will be degraded and who will be uplifted. Come and see there is wealth that does harm to its owner, and there is wealth that benefits its owner. That which does harm to its owner is the wealth of Korach, that he was the richest of all of Israel, and it is written: And they went down, with all that belonged to them, alive to Sheol.
GUIDING QUESTIONS:
How do you think Korach's wealth might have led him to rebel against Moshe?
- confidence, ego, self-importance
(30) But if the LORD brings about something unheard-of, so that the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, you shall know that these men have spurned the LORD.” (31) Scarcely had he finished speaking all these words when the ground under them burst asunder, (32) and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households, all Korah’s people and all their possessions. (33) They went down alive into Sheol, with all that belonged to them; the earth closed over them and they vanished from the midst of the congregation.
And Moshe saw fit to ask that Datan and Aviram and their faction be punished by being swallowed in the earth which would be measure for measure as a judgement. They transgressed by opening their mouths too wide to swallow and to destroy the lord of the prophets [Moshe], though in comparison to him they were despicable and lowly. So too, the earth opened its mouth, the lowest of the four elements, and swallowed them. And our sages, z"l, said that Korach was one of the ones burnt up, and also of the ones who were swallowed up. And in the pshat, every man and all the flocks that was Korach's was swallowed by the earth, except for him because he was with those burning incense. However, the children of Korach did not die, because they were not part of the group. And pay attention in how the Torah says "And the Earth covered them" because that was the crux of the miracle since it often happens that the Earth opens its mouth, "He who is hated by the LORD falls into it" [Prov. 22:14] but this opening always will remain open. But here, since the matter is divinely ordained and miraculous, after the Earth completed its mission to swallow the transgressors, it closed back up as it was at the beginning. And this is why it says, "And the Earth covered them and they vanished from the midst of the congregation."
GUIDING QUESTIONS:

Who is rich? He who rejoices in his lot, as it is said: “You shall enjoy the fruit of your labors, you shall be happy and you shall prosper” (Psalms 128:2) “You shall be happy” in this world, “and you shall prosper” in the world to come.
GUIDING QUESTIONS:
How can working in the garden help to ensure that we remain grounded?
How can we show our appreciation for everything that grows, even when some plants are struggling?
GrowTorah Core Value: Incubating Emunah
Lesson Title: Almond Blossoms
(16) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: (17) Speak to the Israelite people and take from them—from the chieftains of their ancestral houses—one staff for each chieftain of an ancestral house: twelve staffs in all. Inscribe each man’s name on his staff,
(20) The staff of the man whom I choose shall sprout, and I will rid Myself of the incessant mutterings of the Israelites against you.
(23) The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Pact, and there the staff of Aaron of the house of Levi had sprouted: it had brought forth sprouts, produced blossoms, and borne almonds.
ויוצא פרח ויצץ ציץ, “it had brought forth sprouts, produced blossoms, and borne almonds.” The reason the staff produced almonds instead of some other fruit [seeing the almond is not one of the fruit for which the land of Israel is famous, Ed.] is because not only are almonds highly regarded but they are the first to mature after winter. The word שקד suggests a kind of eagerness such as the prophet Jeremiah describing G’d as “eager” to carry out His promise/threat [having shown Jeremiah an almond tree in a vision, Jeremiah 1,11-12. Ed.].
GUIDING QUESTIONS:
What do almonds represent?
- eagerness
Which plants in our garden would share the symbolic significance of almond blossoms?
Living the Lesson
(A) Coming early. To guard: (B) At my doors. To enter the Beit Midrash and Beit Knesset first and to leave last.
GUIDING QUESTIONS:
How can we apply the lesson of the almond blossoms both inside and outside the garden?

(13) Is it not enough that you brought us from a land flowing with milk and honey to have us die in the wilderness, that you would also lord it over us? (14) Even if you had brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey, and given us possession of fields and vineyards, should you gouge out those men’s eyes? We will not come!” (15) Moses was much aggrieved and he said to the LORD, “Pay no regard to their oblation. I have not taken the ass of any one of them, nor have I wronged any one of them.”
