Sigmund Freud, The Future of an Illusion
Religion is a system of wishful illusions together with a disavowal of reality, such as we find nowhere else but in a state of blissful hallucinatory confusion. Religion's eleventh commandment is "Thou shalt not question."
...Religion is comparable to a childhood neurosis ... mankind will surmount this neurotic phase, just as so many children grow out of their similar neurosis.
Sigmund Freud, The Ego and the Id
...the father is perceived as an obstacle... this gives rise to the Oedipus complex.
(34) Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD. (35) On the first day shall be a holy convocation; ye shall do no manner of servile work. (36) Seven days ye shall bring an offering made by fire unto the LORD; on the eighth day shall be a holy convocation unto you; and ye shall bring an offering made by fire unto the LORD; it is a day of solemn assembly; ye shall do no manner of servile work. (37) These are the appointed seasons of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to bring an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt-offering, and a meal-offering, a sacrifice, and drink-offerings, each on its own day; (38) beside the sabbaths of the LORD, and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill-offerings, which ye give unto the LORD. (39) Howbeit on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruits of the land, ye shall keep the feast of the LORD seven days; on the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest. (40) And ye shall take you on the first day the fruit of goodly trees, branches of palm-trees, and boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook, and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. (41) And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year; it is a statute for ever in your generations; ye shall keep it in the seventh month. (42) Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are home-born in Israel shall dwell in booths; (43) that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. (44) And Moses declared unto the children of Israel the appointed seasons of the LORD.
Ritva Sukkah 28b
I heard in the name of our great rabbi Nachmanides, may he rest in peace, that it comes to teach us that one is not obligated in Sukkah unless he is like a refreshed citizen, which excludes travelers, guards of fruit [orchards], one who is uncomfortable, and similar cases. And whenever we invoke “teshvu ke’ein taduru” we derive it from here, for this verse reveals to us that when it says “you shall sit” it does not mean any sitting, rather [it means] sitting as one would dwell…
Rashi Devarim Chapter 8
Your skirt did not wear - The clouds of Divine Glory rubbed the grime off their clothes and pressed them like pressed garments; and their children too, as they grew, their clothes grew with them, similar to the covering (shell) of a snail which grows with it.
Nor did swell - It did not blow up like dough. This usually happens to those who walk barefoot, that their feet become swollen.
Pri Etz Chaim, Holiday of Sukkot, Ch. 4
The notion of Sukkah, it was previously explained, for the secret of the Sukkah is the aspect of the surrounding of the mother's kindnesses... and behold it is known what the rabbis said, that the essence of the Sukkah is two walls according to their law, and a third even a hand's breadth. And that is the notion of the arm's embrace...
Sha'ar Ha-Kavanot, Sukkot Sermons, 4
And this secret is explained by the addition of "And cast over us your Sukkah of peace," which they established to say on the night of Shabbat in the blessing of "Hashkivenu."
(10) For though my father and my mother have forsaken me, The Lord will take me up.
Rashi Vayikra Chapter 23
It is [a day] of convocation - I have kept you with me, like a king who invited his children for a feast for a certain number of days, when the time came for them to leave, he said: "My children, I beg of you, remain with me one more day; your leaving is difficult for me."
Likutei Moharan Kama 48
And this is the characteristic of bina, from which the fetus is created... and it is the characteristic of the Sukkah, as it says, "Protect me in my mother's womb..."
(1) The covering of the sukkah is not kosher from all materials. One may cover only with materials that grew from the earth, that was uprooted from the earth and that is not susceptible to ritual impurity (tumah) and does not have a bad smell nor has fallen or is wilted.
... R. Akiva says, Happy are you, Israel! Before whom are you purified, and who purifies you [of your transgressions]? Your Father Who is in heaven. For it is said, "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean"; and it is also said, "The ritual bath [lit. Hope] of Israel is the Lord"; even as a ritual bath purifies the unclean, so does the Holy One, Blessed be He, purify Israel.
And the later authorities wrote that preferably we require that even at night the stars be visible inside.
