Foundational Texts

In addition to the Haggadah, some of the most important texts of the Passover story are in the book of Exodus (Shemot). You can start reading the story from the beginning, with commentaries, here. Or, check out the chapter that describes the actual exodus here.

Many of the laws and customs of Passover are laid out in the Mishnah in Pesachim, which you can study here. Don't forget to click for explanatory commentaries as well.

Many congregations have the custom of reading Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs) on the Shabbat of Chol Hamoed (intermediate days) Passover. In a year that does not have a Shabbat during Chol Hamoed, it is read on the 7th day of Passover.

Shir HaShirim can be read as an allegory for the love between God and the Jewish people which is celebrated on Passover.
