כִּי הוּא נוֹרָא וְאָיֹם

(2) וּבוֹ תִּנָּשֵׂא {'ש' בדגש} מַלְכוּתֶךָ /

וְיִכּוֹן בְּחֶסֶד כִּסְאֶךָ

(3) וְתֵשֵׁב עָלָיו בְּאֱמֶת /

(3) אֱמֶת כִּי אַתָּה הוּא דַּיָּן

(4) וּמוֹכִיחַ וְיוֹדֵעַ וָעֵד /

וְכוֹתֵב וְחוֹתֵם [וְסוֹפֵר וּמוֹנֶה]

(5) וְתִזְכֹּר כָּל הַנִּשְׁכָּחוֹת /

וְתִפְתַּח סֵפֶר הַזִּכְרוֹנוֹת

(6) וּמֵאֵלָיו יִקָּרֵא /

וְחוֹתָם {'ת' בפתח} יַד כָּל אָדָם בּוֹ

(7) וּבְשׁוֹפָר גָּדוֹל יִתָּקַע / וְקוֹל דְּמָמָה [דַקָּה] יִשָׁמַע

(8) וּמַלְאָכִים יֵחָפֵזוּן / וְחִיל וּרְעָדָה יֹאחֵזוּן

(9) וְיֹאמְרוּ הִנֵּה יוֹם הַדִּין / לִפְקֹד עַל צְבָא-מָרוֹם בַּדִּין

(10) כִּי-לֹא-יִזְכּוּ בְּעֵינֶיךָ {'ב' לא מדגש} בַּדִּין / וְכָל בָּאֵי עוֹלָם יַעַבְרוּן לְפָנֶיךָ כִּבְנֵי-מָרוֹן:

(11) כְּבַקָּרַת רוֹעֶה עֶדְרוֹ / מַעֲבִיר צֹאנוֹ תַּחַת-שִׁבְטוֹ

(12) כֵּן-תַּעֲבִיר וְתִסְפֹּר וְתִמְנֶה / וְתִפְקֹד נֶפֶשׁ כָּל-חָי

(13) וְתַחְתֹּךְ קִצְבָה לְכָל-בְּרִיָּה / וְתִכְתֹּב אֶת- גְּזַר דִּינָם:

(14) בְּרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה יִכָּתֵבוּן / וּבְיוֹם [צוֹם] כִּפּוּר יֵחָתֵמוּן

(15) כַּמָּה יַעַבְרוּן וְכַמָּה יִבָּרֵאוּן / מִי יִחְיֶה וּמִי יָמוּת

(16) מִי בְקִצּוֹ וּמִי לֹא בְּקִצּוֹ /

מִי בַמַּיִם וּמִי בָאֵשׁ

(17) מִי בַחֶרֶב וּמִי בַחַיָּה (נ"א בָרָעָב) [יש מוסיפין מִי בָרָעָב וּמִי בַצָּמָא]

(18) מִי בָרַעַשׁ וּמִי בַמַּגֵּפָה [יש מוסיפין מִי בַחֲנִיקָה וּמִי בַסְּקִילָה]

(19) מִי יָנוּחַ וּמִי יָנוּעַ / מִי יִשָּׁקֵט ישקיט וּמִי יְטֹּרֵף

(20) מִי יִשָּׁלֵו וּמִי יִתְיַסָּר {"ס" בצרי} / מִי יָרוּם וּמִי יֻשְׁפַּל / מִי יַעֲשִׁיר וּמִי יַעֲנִי:

(21) וּתְשׁוּבָה וּתְפִלָּה וּצְדָקָה מַעֲבִירִין אֶת רֹעַ הַגְּזֵרָה.

(22) כִּי כְּשִׁמְךָ {"כ" בלי דגש} כֵּן תְּהִלָּתֶךָ / קָשֶׁה לִכְעוֹס וְנוֹחַ לִרְצוֹת

(23) כִּי לֹא תַחְפֹּץ בְּמוֹת הַמֵּת / כִּי אִם בְּשׁוּבוֹ מִדַּרְכּוֹ וְחָיָה

(24) וְעַד יוֹם מוֹתוֹ תְּחַכֶּה-לו / אִם יָשׁוּב מִיַּד תְּקַבְּלוֹ

(25) [אֱמֶת] כִּי אַתָּה הוּא יוֹצְרָם / וְיוֹדֵעַ יִצְרָם

(26) כִּי הֵם בָּשָׂר וָדָם.

(27) אָדָם יְסוֹדוֹ מֵעָפָר / וְסוֹפוֹ לֶעָפָר

(28) בְּנַפְשׁוֹ יָבִיא לַחְמוֹ / מָשׁוּל כְּחֶרֶס הַנִּשְׁבָּר

(29) כְּחָצִיר יָבֵשׁ וּכְצִיץ נוֹבֵל / כְּצֵל עוֹבֵר וּכְעָנָן כָּלָה {"ל" בסגול}

(30) וּכְרוּחַ נוֹשָׁבֶת וּכְאָבָק פּוֹרֵחַ / וְכַחֲלוֹם יָעוּף:

(31) וְאַתָּה הוּא מֶלֶךְ אֵל חַי וְקַיָּם:

(32) אֵין קִצְבָה לִשְׁנוֹתֶיךָ {"ב" בדגש} / וְאֵין קֵץ לְאוֹרֶךְ יָמֶיךָ {חולם חסר}
(33) וְאֵין שעור לְמַרְכְּבוֹת (נ"א לְשַׁעֵר מַרְכְּבוֹת) כְּבוֹדֶךָ / וְאֵין פרוש לְעֵילוּם (נ"א לְפָרֵשׁ עֵילוּם) שְׁמֶךָ.

(34) שִׁמְךָ נָאֶה לְךָ / וְאַתָּה נָאֶה לִשְׁמֶךָ
(35) וּשְׁמֵנוּ קָרָאתָ בִּשְׁמֶךָ {"ב" בלי דגש} /
עֲשֵׂה לְמַעַן שְׁמֶךָ

(36) וְקַדֵּשׁ אֶת שִׁמְךָ / עַל מַקְדִּישֵׁי שְמֶךָ

(37) [בַּעֲבוּר כְּבוֹד שִׁמְךָ / הַנַּעֲרָץ וְהַנִּקְדָּשׁ]

(38) כְּסוֹד שִׂיחַ שַׂרְפֵי קֹּדֶשׁ / הַמַּקְדִּישִׁים שִׁמְךָ בַּקֹּדֶשׁ

(39) דָּרֵי מַעְלָה עִם דָּרֵי מַטָּה / [קוֹרְאִים

וּמְשַׁלְּשִׁים בְּשִׁלּוּשׁ קְדֻשָּׁה בַּקֹּדֶשׁ:]


(2) וְיִכּוֹן בְּחֶסֶד כִּסְאֶךָ

(3) וְתֵשֵׁב עָלָיו בְּאֱמֶת

(1) And we will tell of the power of the day's holiness /

for it is awe-full and terrible

(2) and on it You elevated your kingship / and Your throne is established with kindness

(3) and You sit on it in truth /

(3) Truth{!} For You are judge

(4) and accuser and knowing and witness / and writer and sealer [and counter and enumerator]

(5) and You remember all those who are forgotten / and You open the book of memories

(6) and from it is read / and every person's personal seal is in it {Sacks - every man's name is signed there}

(7) and a great ram’s horn sounds / but the sound of silence is heard

(8) and the angels are alarmed / and pain and trembling grips them

(9) and they say “Take note! It is the day of judgment / to pass judgment on the heavenly hosts"

(10) For in Your eyes they will not be cleared in the judgement / and all of humanity passes before You like the heavenly creatures.

(11) As a shepherd examines (culls?) his flock / passing his sheep under his crook

(12) So You make pass, and You count, and You measure / and You examine every living thing

(13) and You set a limit for every creature / and You write down their sentence.

(14) On Rosh Hashanah they are inscribed / and on Yom Kippur they are sealed

(15) how many will pass and how many will be created/ who will live and who will die

(16) who at his {proper} end and who not at his {proper} end /

who by water and who by fire

(17) who by the sword and who by wild beast (var. by hunger) [some add who by hunger and who by thirst]

(18) who by earthquake and who by plague [some add who by strangulation and who by stoning]

(19) who will be at rest and who will wander / who will He grant quiet and who will be pursued

(20) who will be calm and who will suffer / who will be raised up and who will be brought low / will will He make wealthy and who will He impoverish.

(21)But repentance and prayer and righteousness annul the severe sentence.

(22) For as your name is so is your renown / hard to anger and easy to appease

(23) for You do not want the death of the condemned man / but rather that he come back from his path and live

(24) and until the day of his death You wait for him / if he comes back You immediately receive him

(25) [It is true] for You are He who formed them / and You know their natural instincts

(26) for they are flesh and blood.

(27) Man, his foundation is dust / and his end is dust

(28) With his nefesh he brings his bread /Compare - like the broken sherd

(29) like dry grass, and like a withered bud / like a passing shadow and a short-lived cloud

(30) and like a wafting breeze / and like blooming dust / and like a fleeting dream.

(31) But You are king, God, living and enduring.

(32) There is no end to Your years / and there is no limit to length of Your days

(33) There is no measure for the chariots of Your glory / and there no explanation for the concealment of Your name.

(34) Your name fits/becomes You / and you fit/are becoming to Your name

(35) And our name you have called (named) with Your name / Do (it) for Your Name

(36) And sanctify Your name / on (?) those who sanctify Your name

(37) [For the glory of Your name / revered and sanctified

(7) וּבְשׁוֹפָר גָּדוֹל יִתָּקַע /

וְקוֹל דְּמָמָה [דַקָּה] יִשָׁמַע

(8) וּמַלְאָכִים יֵחָפֵזוּן / וְחִיל וּרְעָדָה יֹאחֵזוּן

(6) ‘The LORD, the LORD, God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness and truth; (7) keeping mercy unto the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; and clearing {the guilty;}

(13) And in that day, a great ram's horn shall be sounded; and the strayed who are in the land of Assyria and the expelled who are in the land of Egypt shall come and worship the LORD on the holy mountain, in Jerusalem. (NJPS)

(יא) ... וְהִנֵּ֧ה יי עֹבֵ֗ר וְר֣וּחַ גְּדוֹלָ֡ה וְחָזָ֞ק מְפָרֵק֩ הָרִ֨ים וּמְשַׁבֵּ֤ר סְלָעִים֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יי לֹ֥א בָר֖וּחַ יי וְאַחַ֤ר הָר֨וּחַ רַ֔עַשׁ לֹ֥א בָרַ֖עַשׁ יי (יב) וְאַחַ֤ר הָרַ֙עַשׁ֙ אֵ֔שׁ לֹ֥א בָאֵ֖שׁ יי וְאַחַ֣ר הָאֵ֔שׁ ק֖וֹל דְּמָמָ֥ה דַקָּֽה׃

(11) ... and, look, the LORD is about to pass over, with a great and strong wind tearing apart mountains and smashing rocks before the LORD. Not in the wind is the LORD. And after the wind an earthquake; Not in the earthquake is the LORD. (12) And after the earthquake - fire. Not in the fire is the LORD. And after the fire a still small voice. (Alter, mostly)

(יד) פַּ֣חַד קְ֭רָאַנִי וּרְעָדָ֑ה וְרֹ֖ב עַצְמוֹתַ֣י הִפְחִֽיד׃ (טו) וְ֭רוּחַ עַל־פָּנַ֣י יַחֲלֹ֑ף תְּ֝סַמֵּ֗ר שַֽׂעֲרַ֥ת בְּשָׂרִֽי׃ (טז) יַעֲמֹ֤ד ׀ וְֽלֹא־אַכִּ֬יר מַרְאֵ֗הוּ תְּ֭מוּנָה לְנֶ֣גֶד עֵינָ֑י דְּמָמָ֖ה וָק֣וֹל אֶשְׁמָֽע׃


(10) וְכָל בָּאֵי עוֹלָם יַעַבְרוּן לְפָנֶיךָ כִּבְנֵי-מָרוֹן:

(14) Fear called to me, and trembling, and it gripped all my limbs with fear. And a spirit passed over my face, made the hair on my flesh stand on end. (16) It halted, and I did not recognize its image. Silence. Then I heard a sound. (Translation after Alter)

(10) and all of humanity passes before You like the heavenly creatures.

(ב) בארבעה פרקים העולם נדון: בפסח על התבואה, בעצרת על פרות האילן, בראש השנה כל באי העולם עוברין לפניו כבני מרון, שנאמר (תהלים לג) היוצר יחד לבם המבין אל כל מעשיהם, ובחג נדונין על המים.


(21) וּתְשׁוּבָה וּתְפִלָּה וּצְדָקָה מַעֲבִירִין אֶת רֹעַ הַגְּזֵרָה.

(2) At four times the world is judged: On Pesach, for the crops. On Shavuot, for the fruits of the tree. On Rosh Hashnah, all humanity passes before Him like b'nai maron, as it says, "He that fashioneth the hearts of them all, that considereth all their doings." (Psalms 33:15) And on Sukkot, they are judged for the water.

(21)But repentance and prayer and righteousness annul the severe sentence.

(יב) ר' יודן בשם ר' אלעזר אמר: שלושה דברים מבטלים גזירות רעות, ואלו הם: תפלה וצדקה ותשובה, ושלושתן נאמרו בפסוק אחד, הה"ד (ד"ה ב ז): ויכנעו עמי אשר נקרא שמי עליהם. ויתפללו, זו תפלה. ויבקשו פני, הרי צדקה, כמה דאת אמר: (תהלים יז): אני בצדק אחזה פניך. וישובו מדרכם הרעה, זו תשובה. ואח"כ (ד"ה ב ז): ואסלח לחטאם וארפא את ארצם.

R. Yudan said in the name of R. Eliezer: Three things annul harsh (bad) verdicts (decrees), and they are: Prayer, and Righteousness, and Repentance. And all three occur in one verse. (II Chron. 7:14) “When My people, who bear My name, humble themselves, and pray,” this is Prayer, “and seek My face,” this is Righteousness, “and turn from their evil ways,” this is Repentance; and afterward “I will forgive their transgression!, and I will heal their land.”

(יג) הֵ֣ן אֶֽעֱצֹ֤ר הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֣ה מָטָ֔ר וְהֵן־אֲצַוֶּ֥ה עַל־חָגָ֖ב לֶאֱכ֣וֹל הָאָ֑רֶץ וְאִם־אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח דֶּ֖בֶר בְּעַמִּֽי׃ (יד) וְיִכָּנְע֨וּ עַמִּ֜י אֲשֶׁ֧ר נִֽקְרָא־שְׁמִ֣י עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם וְיִֽתְפַּֽלְלוּ֙ וִֽיבַקְשׁ֣וּ פָנַ֔י וְיָשֻׁ֖בוּ מִדַּרְכֵיהֶ֣ם הָרָעִ֑ים וַאֲנִי֙ אֶשְׁמַ֣ע מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְאֶסְלַח֙ לְחַטָּאתָ֔ם וְאֶרְפָּ֖א אֶת־אַרְצָֽם׃ (טו) עַתָּ֗ה עֵינַי֙ יִהְי֣וּ פְתֻח֔וֹת וְאָזְנַ֖י קַשֻּׁב֑וֹת לִתְפִלַּ֖ת הַמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ (טז) וְעַתָּ֗ה בָּחַ֤רְתִּי וְהִקְדַּ֙שְׁתִּי֙ אֶת־הַבַּ֣יִת הַזֶּ֔ה לִהְיוֹת־שְׁמִ֥י שָׁ֖ם עַד־עוֹלָ֑ם וְהָי֨וּ עֵינַ֧י וְלִבִּ֛י שָׁ֖ם כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃


(27) אָדָם יְסוֹדוֹ מֵעָפָר ...

(29) כְּחָצִיר יָבֵשׁ וּכְצִיץ נוֹבֵל ...

(30) וּכְרוּחַ נוֹשָׁבֶת ...

(13) If I shut up the heaven and there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I let loose pestilence among My people; (14) when My people, who bear My name, humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways; I will hear from heaven, and forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (15) Now My eyes will be open, and My ears attentive to the prayer of this place. (16) And now have I chosen and consecrated this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart shall always be there.

(14) For He knows our devisings, recalls that we are dust. (15) Man's days are like grass, like the bloom in the field, thus he blooms - (16) when the wind passes by him, he is gone, and his place will no longer know him. (Alter)

(ח) רַח֣וּם וְחַנּ֣וּן יי אֶ֖רֶךְ אַפַּ֣יִם וְרַב־חָֽסֶד׃ (ט) לֹֽא־לָנֶ֥צַח יָרִ֑יב וְלֹ֖א לְעוֹלָ֣ם יִטּֽוֹר׃ (י) לֹ֣א כַ֭חֲטָאֵינוּ עָ֣שָׂה לָ֑נוּ וְלֹ֥א כַ֝עֲוֺנֹתֵ֗ינוּ גָּמַ֥ל עָלֵֽינוּ׃ (יא) כִּ֤י כִגְבֹ֣הַּ שָׁ֭מַיִם עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ גָּבַ֥ר חַ֝סְדּ֗וֹ עַל־יְרֵאָֽיו׃ (יב) כִּרְחֹ֣ק מִ֭זְרָח מִֽמַּֽעֲרָ֑ב הִֽרְחִ֥יק מִ֝מֶּ֗נּוּ אֶת־פְּשָׁעֵֽינוּ׃ (יג) כְּרַחֵ֣ם אָ֭ב עַל־בָּנִ֑ים רִחַ֥ם יי עַל־יְרֵאָֽיו׃

(יז) וְחֶ֤סֶד יי ׀ מֵעוֹלָ֣ם וְעַד־ע֭וֹלָם עַל־יְרֵאָ֑יו וְ֝צִדְקָת֗וֹ לִבְנֵ֥י בָנִֽים׃

(1) For David. Bless, O my being, the LORD, and everything in me, His holy name. (2) Bless, O my being, the LORD, and do not forget all His generous acts. (3) Who forgives all your wrongs, heals all your illnesses, (4) redeems your life from the Pit, crowns you with kindness, compassion, (5) sates you with good while you live - you renew your youth like the eagle. (6) The LORD performs righteous acts, and justice for all the oppressed. ... (8) Compassionate and gracious, the LORD, slow to anger and abounding in kindness. (9) He will not dispute forever, nor nurse His anger for all time. (10) Not according to our crimes requited us. (11) For as the heavens loom high over earth, His kindness is great over those who fear Him. (12)As the east is far from the west, He has distanced us from our transgressions. (13) As a father has compassion for his children, the LORD has compassion for those who fear Him.
