(28) “Enough!” said Israel. “My son Joseph is still alive! I must go and see him before I die.”
1. I have much joy in Yosef being alive
ENOUGH or MUCH — Much joy and pleasure is still in store for me, since my son Joseph is yet alive.
2. It would have been enough for Yosef to be alive, let alone he be the leader of Egypt
(1) רב, עוד יוסף בני חי, “it is plenty;” Yaakov meant that when the brothers told him that Joseph was alive, and that he was a ruler in Egypt, the second part of the sentence was unnecessary, as long as he knew that Joseph was alive. He was totally unconcerned with Joseph’s standing politically.
(2) רב, עוד יוסף בני חי, “it is indeed great! My son Joseph is still alive!” According to the plain meaning of the text the two separate exclamations by Israel refer to the two separate pieces of information that the brothers had brought with them. 1) The information that Joseph was alive. 2) The news that he occupied such a lofty position in Egypt. When Israel exclaimed רב!, he meant that the news that Joseph was alive was already sufficient good news. The fact that he occupied such a lofty position was an added bonus to the principal news that he was alive.
(2) עוד יוסף בני חי, all the commentaries of others which are convoluted are way off. I, though a junior, say that the meaning of the line רב עוד יוסף בני חי וכי הו מושל בארץ מצרים is: “enough! I am satisfied to have heard that my son Joseph is still alive. The fact that he is ruler in Egypt is totally irrelevant to my joy. I would be perfectly happy without that additional information. I am going to see him before I die, ruler or no ruler.”
3. Rav (Captain), is he still alive?
(1) רב, עוד יוסף בני חי, “it is much; my son Joseph is still alive!” Seeing that at first he did not want to believe them, he asked after the original owners of the עגלות, only to be told that just as a ship is steered by a captain, so the owner of these carriages, i.e. Joseph, is still very much alive. [who else but the “captain,” i.e. Joseph, could have sent all this to Yaakov? Ed]
(1) רב, עוד יוסף בני חי, he addressed the driver of the carriages asking if his son Joseph is indeed still alive? (The word רב meaning “captain, driver” appears in this sense in Jonah, 1,6.) ...
4. Stop telling me that he is alive, it is enough already, you have told me many times
An alternate interpretation: Yaakov’s children kept on telling their father about Joseph’s position in Egypt, until their father got tired of listening to this and tried to stop them by saying: רב, “enough,” I now know that my son Joseph is still alive. He added that if this was really true, he would make the journey to Egypt in order to see him once more before he would die.
5. I have had enough stress of Yosef, Baruch Hashem he is alive and the stress can end!
(1) רב; my heart has stood still long enough during all the years I did not think that Joseph was still alive now I am definitely convinced
6. Wow, Yosef is so strong to be able to still be a Tzadik amongst all those challenges!
(7) Genesis 45,28. “my son Joseph is still alive.” These words, though apparently unnecessary, reflected Yaakov’s joy that his son after these 22 years of being alone in Egypt had remained true to his tradition and the teachings of his father. In spite of his having been exposed during all these years to every perversion known to mankind, he had remained a tzaddik. The word עוד, in this verse emphasizes that the “cultural” influence exuded by Egyptian society, though powerful, was relatively secondary, peripheral, an “also ran,” seeing that Joseph had absorbed the largesse that originated from G’d in heaven, a predominant, and more powerful influence.
7. Now I can be Zoche to Olam HaBa
