(ב) וילינו [וַיִּלּ֜וֹנוּ] כָּל־עֲדַ֧ת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עַל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (ג) וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֲלֵקֶ֜ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מִֽי־יִתֵּ֨ן מוּתֵ֤נוּ בְיַד־ה' בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם בְּשִׁבְתֵּ֙נוּ֙ עַל־סִ֣יר הַבָּשָׂ֔ר בְּאָכְלֵ֥נוּ לֶ֖חֶם לָשֹׂ֑בַע כִּֽי־הוֹצֵאתֶ֤ם אֹתָ֙נוּ֙ אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה לְהָמִ֛ית אֶת־כָּל־הַקָּהָ֥ל הַזֶּ֖ה בָּרָעָֽב׃ (ס)
(ד) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר ה' אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה הִנְנִ֨י מַמְטִ֥יר לָכֶ֛ם לֶ֖חֶם מִן־הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְיָצָ֨א הָעָ֤ם וְלָֽקְטוּ֙ דְּבַר־י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֔וֹ לְמַ֧עַן אֲנַסֶּ֛נּוּ הֲיֵלֵ֥ךְ בְּתוֹרָתִ֖י אִם־לֹֽא׃ (ה) וְהָיָה֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י וְהֵכִ֖ינוּ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־יָבִ֑יאוּ וְהָיָ֣ה מִשְׁנֶ֔ה עַ֥ל אֲשֶֽׁר־יִלְקְט֖וּ י֥וֹם ׀ יֽוֹם׃ (ס)
(2) In the wilderness, the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. (3) The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots, when we ate our fill of bread! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to starve this whole congregation to death.”
(4) And the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread for you from the sky, and the people shall go out and gather each day that day’s portion—that I may thus test them, to see whether they will follow My instructions or not. (5) But on the sixth day, when they apportion what they have brought in, it shall prove to be double the amount they gather each day.”
(30) And the first of all the first-fruits of every thing, and every heave-offering of every thing, of all your offerings, shall be for the priests; you shall also give to the kohen the first of your dough, to cause a blessing to rest on your house.
Dough which is made of the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, rye and oats) require the separation of challah. Before separating challah the following blessing is said: Praised are you, Lord our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has made us holy through Your mitzvot and has commanded us to separate the challah. A piece of dough of size of an olive is then taken and burned in fire. The custom is to burn it in the oven in which the bread will be baked.
MISHNA: How does one recite a blessing over fruits? Over fruits that grow on a tree one recites: Who creates fruit of the tree, with the exception of wine. Over wine one recites: Who creates fruit of the vine. Over fruits that grow from the earth, one recites: Who creates fruit of the ground, with the exception of bread, as over bread one recites: Who brings forth bread from the earth. ... GEMARA: From where do we know that there is an obligation to recite a blessing before eating? As the Sages taught with regard to fruit of trees aged four years old and more that they will be: “…sanctified for praises before the Lord” (Leviticus 19:24). This verse teaches that there needs to be praise of God in the form of a blessing both before and after eating, as the verse says “praises” in the plural. From here, Rabbi Akiva said: A person is forbidden to taste anything before s/he recites a blessing, since it is only with a blessing that we receive food as a gift from God.
(א) לפני אכילת לחם נוטל את ידיו ואומר:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְ‑יָ אֱ‑לֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו, וְצִוָּנוּ עַל נְטִילַת יָדָים:
(ב) על הלחם מברך:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְ‑יָ אֱ‑לֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם הַמּוֹצִיא לֶחֶם מִן הָאָרֶץ:
(1) Before eating bread, wash your hands and bless:
Praised are you, Lord our G-d, Sovereign of the universe, who has made us holy through Your mitzvot and has commanded us to wash our hands.
(2) Blessing before eating bread
Praised are you, Lord our G-d, Ruler of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.
