Touching the cracks

Five great catastrophes occurred in Jewish history on the 17th of Tammuz:

  1. Moses broke the tablets at Mount Sinai – in response to the sin of the Golden Calf.

  2. The daily offerings in the First Temple were suspended during the siege of Jerusalem, after the Kohanim could no longer obtain animals.

  3. Jerusalem's walls were breached, prior to the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE.

  4. Prior to the Great Revolt (132 CE), the Roman general Apostamos burned a Torah scroll – setting a precedent for the horrifying burning of Jewish books throughout the centuries.

  5. An idolatrous image was placed in the Sanctuary of the Holy Temple – a brazen act of blasphemy and desecration.

Our Rabbis taught: When the Temple was destroyed for the second time, large numbers in Israel became ascetics, binding themselves neither to eat meat nor to drink wine. R. Joshua got into conversation with them and said to them: My sons, why do you not eat meat nor drink wine? They replied: Shall we eat flesh which used to be brought as an offering on the altar, now that this altar is in abeyance? Shall we drink wine which used to be poured as a libation on the altar, but now no longer? He said to them: If that is so, we should not eat bread either, because the meal offerings have ceased. .. We should not eat fruit either, [he said,] because there is no longer an offering of firstfruits. Then we can manage with other fruits [they said]. But, [he said,] we should not drink water, because there is no longer any ceremony of the pouring of water. To this they could find no answer, so he said to them: My sons, come and listen to me. Not to mourn at all is impossible, because the blow has fallen. To mourn overmuch is also impossible, ... The Sages therefore have ordained thus. A man may stucco his house, but he should leave a little bare. ... A man can prepare a full-course banquet, but he should leave out an item or two. ...A woman can put on all her ornaments, but leave off one or two... For so it says, If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I remember thee not, if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. presumptuously.

1. Why to mourn? 2. What is the diferent between Mourning and Memorial?

ASPECTS OF MOURNING DURING THE THREE WEEKS

  1. No weddings are held. (However, engagement ceremonies are permitted.)
  2. We do not listen to music.
  3. We avoid all public celebrations -- especially those which involve dancing and musical accompaniment.
  4. We avoid exciting and entertaining trips and activities. (Kaf HaChaim - OC 551:41)
  5. No haircuts or shaving. (Fingernails may be clipped up until the week in which Tisha B'Av falls.)
  6. We do not say the blessing She-hechianu on new food or clothes, except on Shabbat.
