Loving G-d

(5) And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

(1) The commandment of loving God - That we are commanded to love God blessed is He (as cited in the Ramabam - Yesodei Hatorah 2:1) as it says (Deuteronomy 6:5) "And you should Love Hashem your God" The substance of the precept is that we should consider and reflect on his commandments and his handiwork, until we attain a concept of Him according to our ability, and we can then feel joy in apperceiving Him, with the utmost delight. This is the obligatory, essential love.

If then your heart, your life, your wealth are only means for loving G-d, you ought naturally to love Him more than your heart, your life and your wealth. You should never hesitate when it is a question between abandoning the ways of G-d or the inclination of your heart, to throw away inclination, wealth and life in order to remain true to your G-d.
