(1) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (2) “Send men to scout the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelite people; send one man from each of their ancestral tribes, each one a chieftain among them.” (3) So Moses, by the LORD’s command, sent them out from the wilderness of Paran, all the men being leaders of the Israelites. (4) And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur. (5) From the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori. (6) From the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh. (7) From the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph. (8) From the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea son of Nun. (9) From the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Rafu. (10) From the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi. (11) From the tribe of Joseph, namely, the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi. (12) From the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli. (13) From the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael. (14) From the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi. (15) From the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi. (16) Those were the names of the men whom Moses sent to scout the land; but Moses changed the name of Hosea son of Nun to Joshua.
(כא) וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ וַיָּתֻ֣רוּ אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ מִמִּדְבַּר־צִ֥ן עַד־רְחֹ֖ב לְבֹ֥א חֲמָֽת׃ (כב) וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בַנֶּגֶב֮ וַיָּבֹ֣א עַד־חֶבְרוֹן֒ וְשָׁ֤ם אֲחִימַן֙ שֵׁשַׁ֣י וְתַלְמַ֔י יְלִידֵ֖י הָעֲנָ֑ק וְחֶבְר֗וֹן שֶׁ֤בַע שָׁנִים֙ נִבְנְתָ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י צֹ֥עַן מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (כג) וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ עַד־נַ֣חַל אֶשְׁכֹּ֗ל וַיִּכְרְת֨וּ מִשָּׁ֤ם זְמוֹרָה֙ וְאֶשְׁכּ֤וֹל עֲנָבִים֙ אֶחָ֔ד וַיִּשָּׂאֻ֥הוּ בַמּ֖וֹט בִּשְׁנָ֑יִם וּמִן־הָרִמֹּנִ֖ים וּמִן־הַתְּאֵנִֽים׃ (כד) לַמָּק֣וֹם הַה֔וּא קָרָ֖א נַ֣חַל אֶשְׁכּ֑וֹל עַ֚ל אֹד֣וֹת הָֽאֶשְׁכּ֔וֹל אֲשֶׁר־כָּרְת֥וּ מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (כה) וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ מִתּ֣וּר הָאָ֑רֶץ מִקֵּ֖ץ אַרְבָּעִ֥ים יֽוֹם׃
(21) They went up and scouted the land, from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, at Lebo-hamath. (22) They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron, where lived Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the Anakites.—Now Hebron was founded seven years before Zoan of Egypt.— (23) They reached the wadi Eshcol, and there they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes—it had to be borne on a carrying frame by two of them—and some pomegranates and figs. (24) That place was named the wadi Eshcol because of the cluster that the Israelites cut down there. (25) At the end of forty days they returned from scouting the land.
יהושע כבר בקש משה עליו רחמים שנאמר (במדבר יג, טז) ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע יה יושיעך מעצת מרגלים והיינו דכתיב (במדבר יד, כד) ועבדי כלב עקב היתה רוח אחרת עמו וגו'
The Gemara explains: Joshua did not go to the graves of the forefathers because Moses had already prayed for mercy for him, as it is stated: “And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua [Yehoshua]” (Numbers 13:16), meaning: God will save you [Ya yoshiakha] from the counsel of the spies. And this is the meaning of that which is written: “But My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land where into he went” (Numbers 14:24), which implies that Caleb changed his mind over time. Joshua, however, was opposed to the intentions of the other spies from the outset.

(1) At the turn of the year, the season when kings go out [to battle], David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel with him, and they devastated Ammon and besieged Rabbah; David remained in Jerusalem. (2) Late one afternoon, David rose from his couch and strolled on the roof of the royal palace; and from the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, (3) and the king sent someone to make inquiries about the woman. He reported, “She is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam [and] wife of Uriah the Hittite.” (4) David sent messengers to fetch her; she came to him and he lay with her—she had just purified herself after her period—and she went back home. (5) The woman conceived, and she sent word to David, “I am pregnant.”
ונקיתי מפשע רב שלא יכתב סרחוני אמר לו א"א ומה יו"ד שנטלתי משרי עומד וצווח כמה שנים עד שבא יהושע והוספתי לו שנאמר (במדבר יג, טז) ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע כל הפרשה כולה עאכ"ו
David requested: “And I shall be clear from great transgression” (Psalms 19:14), meaning that my transgression with Bathsheba and Uriah will not be written in the Bible. God said to him: That is impossible. And just as the letter yod that I removed from the name of Sarai, wife of Abraham, when I changed her name to Sarah, was standing and screaming several years over its omission from the Bible until Joshua came and I added the yod to his name, as it is stated: “And Moses called Hosea, son of Nun, Joshua [Yehoshua]” (Numbers 13:16); the entire portion of your transgression, which is fit to be included in the Bible, all the more so it cannot be omitted.

(קה) דרש רבי דוסתאי דמן בירי למה דוד דומה לסוחר כותי אמר דוד לפני הקב״ה רבש״ע (תהלים יט יג) שגיאות מי יבין א״ל שבקי לך מנסתרות נקני שביקי לך גם מזדים חשוך עבדך שביקי לך אל ימשלו בי אז איתם דלא לשתעו בי רבנן שבקי לך ונקיתי מפשע רב שלא יכתוב סורחני אמר לו אי אפשר ומה יו"ד שנטלתי משרי עמד וצוה כמה שנים עד שבא יהושע והוספתי לו שנאמר (במדבר יג טז) ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע כל הפרשה כלה על אחת כמה וכמה. ונקיתי מפשע רב אמר לפניו רבש״ע מחול לי על אותו עון כולו אמר כבר עתיד שלמה בנך לומר בחכמתו (משלי ו כז) היחתה איש אש בחיקו ובגדיו לא תשרפנה אם יהלך איש על גחלים ורגליו לא תכוינה כן הבא אל אשת רעהו לא ינקה כל הנוגע בה א״ל כל הכי נטרד ההוא גברא א״ל קביל עליך יסורין קביל עליה אמר רב יהודה אמר רב ששה חדשים נצטרע דוד ונסתלקה הימנו שכינה ופירשו ממנו סנהדרין נצטרע דכתיב (תהלים נא ט) תחטאני באזוב ואטהר וגו׳ נסתלקה הימט שכינה דכתיב (שם נא יד) השיבה לי ששון ישעך וגומר ופרשו ממנו סנהדרין דכתיב (שם קיט עט) ישובו לי יראיך וגו׳ ו' חדשים מנ״ל דכתיב (מ״א ב יא) והימים אשר מלך דוד על ישראל ארבעים שנה (ע״ב) בחברון מלך שבע שנים ובירושלים מלך שלשים ושלש שנים וכתיב (ש״ב ה ה) בחברון מלך על יהודה שבע שנים וששה חדשים ובירושלים מלך ל״ג שנה והנך ו׳ חדשים נצטרע דוד ונסתלקה הימנו שכינה (תהלים פו יז) עשה עמי אות לטובה וגו׳ אמר לפניו רבש״ע מחול לי על אותו עון מחול לך עשה עמי אות לטובה ויראו שונאי ויבושו א״ל בחייך איני מודיע אבל אני מודיע בחיי שלמה בנך בשעה שבנה שלמה את ביה״מ בקש להכניס ארון לבית קדשי הקדשים דבקו שערים זה בזה אמר כ״ד רננות ולא נענה אמר (שם כד ז) שאו שערים ראשיכם והנשאו פתחי עולם ויבא מלך הכבוד וגו׳ ולא נענה כיון שאמר (דהי״ב ו מב) ה׳ אלהים אל תשב פני משיחך זכרה לחסדי דוד עבדך מיד נענה באותה שעת נהפכו פני שונאי דוד לשולי קדרה וידעו כל ישראל שמחל לו הקב״ה על אותו עון:

(105) R. Dusthai, of the city of Biri, lectured: "Unto what may be likened the system of David's praver ? "Unto a peddler who wanted to sell out his stock little by little. He said before the Holy One, praised be He! (Ps. 19,13-15) 'Sovereign of the Universe, who can guard against errors?' And he was answered, 'They will be forgiven.' (Ib.) 'From secrets (faults) do Thou cleanse me.' 'They will be forgiven.' (Ib.) 'Also from presumptuous sins withhold Thy servants.' 'This will [also] be forgiven.' (Ib.) 'Let them not have dominion over me,' i.e., the Rabbis shall not talk about me. 'This will [also] be allowed to you.' (Ib.) 'Then shall I be blameless,' i.e., my sins shall not be written. And he was answered, 'This is impossible, for, if the Yud which I took away from the name of Sarai complained before me several years, until Joshua came and I added it to his name, as it is said (Num. 13, 16) And Moses called Hoshea; the son of Nun, Joshua, how much more [will there be complaints] if I omit a whole portion of the Torah?' (Ps. 19) Clear from any great transgression, i.e., He said before him : 'Sovereign of the Universe, forgive me the whole sin.' And he was answered, 'It is revealed before Me what Solomon, thy son, will say in his wisdom in the future (Pr. 6, 27-30) Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burnt? Or can one walk upon hot coals, and shall his feet not be scorched? So he that goeth in to his neighbor's wife; whosoever touches her shall not go unpunished.' He then exclaimed, 'If so, then I am lost.' And he was answered : 'Accept affliction upon thyself.' Immediately David accepted affliction upon himself." R. Juda said in the name of Rab : "Six months was David afflicted with leprosy; the Shechina left him, and the Sanhedrin separated themselves from him. He was inflicted with leprosy, as it is written (Ps. 51, 9) Purge me [from sin] with hyssop, etc. The Shechina left him, as it is written (Ib., ib., 14) Restore unto me the gladness of Thy salvation. The Sanhedrin separated themselves from him, as it is written (Ib. 119, 79) Let those that fear Thee return unto me and they that know Thy testimonies. That all this lasted fully six months — when do we learn it ? From the following passage (I Kings, 2, 11) And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years; (Ib. b) In Hebron he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah. Hence we see that the six months more [which are counted in II Samuel] are not counted [in I Kings], and this was because the six months in which he was inflicted with leprosy were not counted." (Ps. 86, 17) Display on me a sign for good, etc. Thus said David before the Holy One, praised be He! "Sovereign of the universe, forgive me this sin [of Bath Sheba]." "Thou art forgiven," answered the Lord. David then said to the Lord : "Show me a sign while I live." Whereupon He answered, "During thy life I shall not make it known but during the life of Solomon, thy son, I shall make it known." When Solomon had built the Temple he desired to place the ark in the holy of holies, but the gates had become fastened to each other [and they could not be opened]. Solomon then offered twenty-four prayer-songs but was not answered. He then said the prayer (Ps. 24, 9) Raise your heads, O ye gates, and raise up, ye everlasting doors, and let the King of glory enter. Who is the King of glory, the Lord of Hosts, He is the King of glory, Selah (II Chr. 6, l2). Still he was not answered; but as soon as he said O Lord God, turn not away the face of Thy anointed, remember the pious deeds of David Thy servant, he was immediately answered. At that moment the faces of David's enemies turned black like the bottom of a pot and then it was known to all that the Holy One, praised be He ! had forgiven David that sin.

(יא) לְמַֽעַן־שִׁמְךָ֥ יְהוָ֑ה וְֽסָלַחְתָּ֥ לַ֝עֲוֺנִ֗י כִּ֣י רַב־הֽוּא׃
(11) As befits Your name, O LORD, pardon my iniquity though it be great.

(יג) רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר, הֱוֵי זָהִיר בַּתַּלְמוּד, שֶׁשִּׁגְגַת תַּלְמוּד עוֹלָה זָדוֹן. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר, שְׁלשָׁה כְתָרִים הֵם, כֶּתֶר תּוֹרָה וְכֶתֶר כְּהֻנָּה וְכֶתֶר מַלְכוּת, וְכֶתֶר שֵׁם טוֹב עוֹלֶה עַל גַּבֵּיהֶן:

(13) Rabbi Yehuda says: Be careful in study, for an error in study is considered an intentional transgression. Rabbi Shimon says: There are three crowns: the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood and the crown of monarchy - but the crown of a good name outweighs them all.

A good leader must be strong in his own identity, and willing and able to withstand public pressure. A leader of Bnei Yisroel must also love the land of Eretz Yisroel and understand that his personal gifts of leadership and the land are gifts Hashem has given us to enhance our relationship with Him through our service to Him. All this and so much more Moshe imparted to Yehoshuah by adding the yud from the original name of Sarah Imenu to the original name of Hosheah who would lead us into Eretz Yisroel. All this becomes part of our legacy as well as we are descendants of Sarah and Avraham. Shira Smiles.

(לז) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (לח) דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם וְעָשׂ֨וּ לָהֶ֥ם צִיצִ֛ת עַל־כַּנְפֵ֥י בִגְדֵיהֶ֖ם לְדֹרֹתָ֑ם וְנָֽתְנ֛וּ עַל־צִיצִ֥ת הַכָּנָ֖ף פְּתִ֥יל תְּכֵֽלֶת׃ (לט) וְהָיָ֣ה לָכֶם֮ לְצִיצִת֒ וּרְאִיתֶ֣ם אֹת֗וֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם֙ אֶת־כָּל־מִצְוֺ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑ם וְלֹֽא־תָתֻ֜רוּ אַחֲרֵ֤י לְבַבְכֶם֙ וְאַחֲרֵ֣י עֵֽינֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־אַתֶּ֥ם זֹנִ֖ים אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃
(37) The LORD said to Moses as follows: (38) Speak to the Israelite people and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout the ages; let them attach a cord of blue to the fringe at each corner. (39) That shall be your fringe; look at it and recall all the commandments of the LORD and observe them, so that you do not follow your heart and eyes in your lustful urge.
