לעולם פשיטא ליה, דעד ארעית דתהומא קדיש
It is obvious... that King David sanctified the site of the Temple to the depths of the earth
ואע"ג דשלמה בנה הבית, דוד קידשה
Even though Shlomo built the Beit HaMikdash, David was the one who sanctified it
תנו רבנן: אדם יחידי נברא ומפני מה?
מפני הצדיקים ומפני הרשעים-
שלא יהו הצדיקים אומרים אנו בני צדיק, ורשעים אומרים אנו בני רשע.
Adam was created alone, and for what reason? Due to the righteous and due to the wicked. It was so that the righteous will not say: We are the children of the righteous, and it comes natural to us, there is no need for us to exert ourselves, and so the wicked will not say: We are the children of the wicked and cannot change our ways.
שְׁלַח־לְךָ֣ אֲנָשִׁ֗ים וְיָתֻ֙רוּ֙ אֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן... אִ֣ישׁ אֶחָד֩ אִ֨ישׁ אֶחָ֜ד לְמַטֵּ֤ה אֲבֹתָיו֙ תִּשְׁלָ֔חוּ כֹּ֖ל נָשִׂ֥יא בָהֶֽם׃
Send men to scout the land of Canaan...send one man from each of their ancestral tribes, each one a chieftain among them.
(כח) אֶ֚פֶס כִּֽי־עַ֣ז הָעָ֔ם הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב בָּאָ֑רֶץ וְהֶֽעָרִ֗ים בְּצֻר֤וֹת גְּדֹלֹת֙ מְאֹ֔ד וְגַם־יְלִדֵ֥י הָֽעֲנָ֖ק רָאִ֥ינוּ שָֽׁם׃ (לב)הָאָ֡רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֩ עָבַ֨רְנוּ בָ֜הּ לָת֣וּר אֹתָ֗הּ אֶ֣רֶץ אֹכֶ֤לֶת יוֹשְׁבֶ֙יהָ֙ הִ֔וא וְכָל־הָעָ֛ם אֲשֶׁר־רָאִ֥ינוּ בְתוֹכָ֖הּ אַנְשֵׁ֥י מִדּֽוֹת׃
(28) However, the people who inhabit the country are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large...We cannot attack that people, for it is stronger than we...
(32) The country that we traversed and scouted is one that devours its settlers. All the people that we saw in it are men of great size...
(ז) ... הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָבַ֤רְנוּ בָהּ֙ לָת֣וּר אֹתָ֔הּ טוֹבָ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ מְאֹ֥ד מְאֹֽד׃ (ח) אִם־חָפֵ֥ץ בָּ֙נוּ֙ ה' וְהֵבִ֤יא אֹתָ֙נוּ֙ אֶל־הָאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את וּנְתָנָ֖הּ לָ֑נוּ אֶ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־הִ֛וא זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָֽשׁ... וַֽה' אִתָּ֖נוּ אַל־תִּירָאֻֽם׃
(7) The land that we traversed and scouted is an exceedingly good land. (8) If the LORD is pleased with us, He will bring us into that land, a land that flows with milk and honey, and give it to us; (9) Have no fear of the people of the country - the LORD is with us.
ד"א "ולא תתורו אחרי לבבכם" מגיד שהעינים הולכים אחר הלב.
What is the intent of "And you shall not go astray after your hearts and after your eyes"?: That the eyes follow the heart.
וַיְהִי֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י בִּֽהְיֹ֣ת הַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיְהִי֩ קֹלֹ֨ת וּבְרָקִ֜ים וְעָנָ֤ן כָּבֵד֙ עַל־הָהָ֔ר וְקֹ֥ל שֹׁפָ֖ר חָזָ֣ק מְאֹ֑ד וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כָּל־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה... וְהַ֤ר סִינַי֙ עָשַׁ֣ן כֻּלּ֔וֹ מִ֠פְּנֵי אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרַ֥ד עָלָ֛יו ה' בָּאֵ֑שׁ וַיַּ֤עַל עֲשָׁנוֹ֙ כְּעֶ֣שֶׁן הַכִּבְשָׁ֔ן וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כָּל־הָהָ֖ר מְאֹֽד׃ וַיְהִי֙ ק֣וֹל הַשּׁוֹפָ֔ר הוֹלֵ֖ךְ וְחָזֵ֣ק מְאֹ֑ד מֹשֶׁ֣ה יְדַבֵּ֔ר וְהָאֱלֹהִ֖ים יַעֲנֶ֥נּוּ בְקֽוֹל׃
On the third day, as morning dawned, there was thunder, and lightning, and a dense cloud upon the mountain, and a very loud blast of the horn; and all the people who were in the camp trembled...Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke, for G-d had come down upon it in fire; the smoke rose like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled violently. The blare of the horn grew louder and louder. As Moses spoke, G-d answered him in thunder.
כי באמת לא היתה כל האומה שוה במדרגת השגה זו... הנה כמות האש האוכלת בדבר הוא לפי כמות הכנת הטבע שבדבר אל קבלת האש...ככה במעמד הנכבד והנורא, כולם זכו למראה הרוחנית מכבוד הנעלה... אבל כל אחד רק לפי הכנת נפשו אל קבלת השגה זו, המומעט בהשלמה הי' מעט ההשגה, והמרבה בזה נתרבה גם בזה...
The truth is that the entire nation did not have an equal experience when it came to the receipt of the Torah... The same way various objects react to fires differently, burning in distinct ways, so too each individual experienced the Torah revelation in a different manner. The experience varied based on spiritual preparedness and readiness to accept it. (Loosely translated)
כֹּ֠ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר תִּמְצָ֧א יָֽדְךָ֛ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת בְּכֹחֲךָ֖, עֲשֵׂ֑ה
Whatever it is in your power to do,
do with all your might.
רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר: בָּעַז עָשָׂה אֶת שֶׁלּוֹ, וְרוּת עָשְׂתָה אֶת שֶׁלָּהּ, וְנָעֳמִי עָשְׂתָה אֶת שֶׁלָּהּ, אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, אַף אֲנִי אֶעֱשֶׂה אֶת שֶׁלִּי
Rabbi Eliezer says:
Boaz did [his job,] Ruth did [her job,]
and Naomi did [her job.]
Said Hashem- I will also do mine.
אלא, להלך אחר מדותיו של הקב"ה.
מה הוא מלביש ערומים דכתיב (בראשית ג:כא) ויעש ה' אלקים לאדם ולאשתו כתנות עור וילבישם, אף אתה הלבש ערומים. הקב"ה ביקר חולים דכתיב (בראשית יח:א) וירא אליו ה' באלוני ממרא, אף אתה בקר חולים. הקב"ה ניחם אבלים דכתיב (בראשית כה:יא) ויהי אחרי מות אברהם ויברך אלקים את יצחק בנו אף אתה נחם אבלים הקב"ה קבר מתים דכתיב (דברים לד:ו) ויקבר אותו בגיא, אף אתה קבור מתים.
One should follow the attributes of G-d . Just as He clothes the naked, as it is written: “And the Lord made for Adam and for his wife garments of skin, and clothed them” so too, should you clothe the naked. Just as He visits the sick, as it is written with regard to G-d’s appearing to Abraham following his circumcision: “And the Lord appeared unto him by the terebinths of Mamre” so too, should you visit the sick. Just as He consoles mourners, as it is written: “And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that G-d blessed Isaac his son” so too, should you console mourners. Just as He buried the dead, as it is written: “And he was buried in the valley in the land of Moab” so too, should you bury the dead.
אבא שאול אומר: ואנוהו הוי דומה לו.
מה הוא חנון ורחום, אף אתה היה חנון ורחום.
Abba Shaul says: Ve’anveihu should be interpreted as Be similar, as it were, to Him, the Almighty: Just as He is compassionate and merciful, so too should you be compassionate and merciful.
אחד המרבה ואחד הממעיט, ובלבד שיכוין לבו לשמים
One who brings a substantial sacrifice and one who brings a meager sacrifice have equal merit, as long as he directs his heart toward Heaven.
