Rosh, Bava Metzia 3:10
R. Alfasi ruled like R. Yochanan, and I don't know why, since R. Nachman the son of Yitzchak is the later authority . . . I wonder about the words of R. Alfasi since we do not think that the principle of following the last authority begins with Abayee and Rava, and that in the earlier generations the law is not like a student when he argues with his teacher. Suggested Discussion Questions:

What is the significance of the law following the later authority?

How does this relate to the statement of R. Zeira?

The Rosh seems to be arguing with someone as to whether the law applies in all periods or not. Why might they be disagreeing?
