אנשי סדום אמרו הואיל ומזון יוצא מארצנו וכסף וזהב יוצא מארצנו ואבנים טובות ומרגליות יוצאות מארצנו אין אנו צריכין שיבאו בני אדם עלינו אין באין עלינו אלא לחסרנו נעמוד ונשכח את הרגל מבינותינו אמר להם המקום בטובה שהשפעתי לכם אתם משכחין את הרגל מביניכם אני אשכח אתכם מן העולם
The men of Sodom said: Since our land produces food, gold, silver, precious stones and pearls we have no need for outsiders. They would only come to take from us. Let us be firm and let us neglect the custom of receiving travelers. God responded to them: Since you reject travelers amongst yourselves, in exchange, I will reject you from the world.
