If one is digging a pit in a public domain and an ox falls upon the person and kills them, [the owner of the ox] is exempt. Moreover, if the ox dies, [compensation for] its value must be paid to its owner by the heirs of the owner of the pit. [Translation by Uri L’Tzedek. Edited for gender neutrality]

Suggested Discussion Questions:

1. Why is the owner of the pit obligated in full restitution to the owner of the ox?

2. If one creates a situation that poses danger to the public, what is their obligation to protect people?
