ואמר רבי חנינא: הכל בידי שמים - חוץ מיראת שמים, שנאמר +דברים י'+: ועתה ישראל מה ה' אלהיך שואל מעמך כי אם ליראה. אטו יראת שמים מילתא זוטרתא היא? והאמר רבי חנינא משום רבי שמעון בן יוחי: אין לו להקדוש ברוך הוא בבית גנזיו אלא אוצר של יראת שמים, שנאמר: +ישעיהו ל"ג+ יראת ה' היא אוצרו!
Rabbi Hanina said: Everything is in the hands of heaven except for the fear of heaven, as is says, "And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you but to fear" (Deuteronomy 10:12). Is the fear of heaven such a little thing? Has not Rabbi Hanina said in the name of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai: The Holy Blessed One, has in God's treasury nothing except a store of the fear of heaven, as it says, "the fear of the Lord is his treasure" (Isaiah 33:6)?
