ואת מי שנפשו שרויה במדת הקמצנות כנתה התורה בשם “כופר”. נאמר (דברים י”ג, י”ד): “יצאו אנשים בני בליעל” וכו’, ונאמר (שם ט”ו, ט’): “השמר לך פן יהיה דבר עם לבבך בליעל לאמור” וכו’.
The Torah labels one with a stingy character a “heretic.” In one place it says, “Those who are bliya’al (heretical) have come out [and incited the city to worship other gods]” (Deuteronomy 13:14); elsewhere, it says (ibid. 15:9), “Guard yourself, lest there be a matter of bliya’al in your heart” (dissuading you from lending to one in need).
