The Torah is a complicated book, to say the least. We know that Hashem gave us the Torah in order to help us succeed in life and to help make our lives meaningful. But at first glance, the Torah seems to be halachot lma'aseh and a bunch of mitzvot. Is building a succah, assuming it's a mitzvah, going to help make my life meaningful? What is the true purpose of all these mitzvot and halachot?
Why do we do Mitzvot?
From these pesukim, it is easy to see that the similarities between the mitzvot/ shoresh of all mitzvot is to replicate Hashem's actions. But why do we need to replicate Hashem's actions? How will this help us live a meaningful life?
The Ikur - Tikkun Middos
The Gra on Proverbs 4:13
(1) The commandment to walk in - and make oneself similar through - the ways of God, may He be blessed: That we were commanded to perform all our actions in the way of straightness and goodness with all our strength and to incline all our affairs that are between ourselves and others towards the way of kindness and mercy; as we have known from our holy Torah that this is the way of God, and this is God’s desire for His creatures so that they merit God’s goodness - as He desires kindness. And about this is it stated (Deuteronomy 28:9), "and you shall walk in His ways." And this commandment was further repeated in another place, as it is stated (Deuteronomy 10:12, 11:22), "to walk in all His ways."
(2) Rabban Gamliel the son of Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi said: Excellent is the study of the Torah together with a worldly occupation; for the exertion [expended] in both of them causes sin to be forgotten. And all [study of the] Torah in the absence of a worldly occupation comes to nothing in the end and leads to sin.
(5) Rabbi Nechunya ben Hakanah says: Anyone who accepts the yoke of Torah upon himself, they lift from him the yoke of government and the yoke of the way of the world (derekh erets). And anyone who casts from himself the yoke of Torah, they place upon him the yoke of government and the yoke of the way of the world (derekh erets).
(17) Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah says: If there is no Torah, there is no worldly occupation; if there is no worldly occupation, there is no Torah.
Rav Chaim Vital quoted in Olam Hamiddos
Please excuse any mistakes in translation
And behold, the matter of middot is part of the nature of man in the nefesh hasphila that is called the foundational, etc. And behold this nefesh is dependent on the good and ______ middos, and they are the chair, foundation, and root of this nefesh ha'elyonah hascalit on which the 613 mitzvot of the torah are dependent upon...... And therefore, there is no midot ___ the 613 mitzvot, and hence they are the principle (preparations) for the 613 mitzvot, in their nulification or fulfillment; there is no power in the nefesh hascalit to fulifll the mitzvot, with the power of the 613 limbs of the body, rather in the middle of the fundamental nefesh that connects the body to itself...
And we find, that it is more needed to be careful of bad middot over the fulfillment of mitzvot, both negative and positive, because in the being of a ba'al midot tovot he will fulfill all the mitzvot
Madraigos Adam quoted in Olam Hamiddos
(1) Chapter 1 - That it is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator: It is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator and then he will be [configured] in the secret of the Highest Form, [both] in image and likeness. As if he is alike in his body but not in his actions, he betrays the Form; and they will say about him, "A lovely form, but ugly deeds." As behold, the essence of the Highest Image and Likeness is His actions. And what will it benefit him to have the structure of his limbs like the Highest Form, but not resemble his Creator in his actions? Therefore it is fitting that he should [make his actions] resemble the actions of the Crown (Keter), which are the thirteen highest traits of mercy. And they are hinted to in the secret of the verses (Michah 7:18-20), "Who is a power like You; He will again have mercy on us; You shall give truth." If so, it is fitting that these thirteen traits [also] be found in man. And now we will explain these thirteen actions that are fitting to be with him.
So, one theory is that the fulfillment of mitzvot are designed to help us replicate Hashem's actions and since Hashem, has perfect middos, we are striving to reach a higher spiritual level, which is the result of a "higher" pnimit, which can be achieved through tikun middos....
How does the fulfillment of mitzvot help us become better people?
Actions Create Emotions
Noam Shpancer Ph.D. on Psychology Today
In the summer of 1971, a team of researchers led by Psychology professor Phillips Zimbardo divided a group of undergraduates randomly into two groups, prisoners and prison guards, and arranged for them to act out their respective roles in a mock prison in the basement of the Stanford psychology building.
Within days, the guards began to display authoritarian attitudes, ultimately subjecting some of the prisoners to intentional humiliation. The prisoners developed passive attitudes, many sinking into a depressed state. The experiment had to be stopped after only six days.
The Stanford prison experiment is often said to illustrate the power of social roles in shaping behavior, but it also illustrates the power of behavior to elicit real powerful emotions. The guards in Zimbardo's experiments were not really guards. And the prisoners were not prisoners. They were all volunteers. They were all students. But once they began to act the part, they began to feel the part.
Many people assume that the link between emotion and behavior is one-way: Emotions shape behavior. You love him, therefore you kiss him. You hate him, therefore you hit him. This view is incorrect. In fact, the relationship is reciprocal. Much of the time, behavior actually shapes emotion.
This idea that actions affect emotions, i.e. our pnimit/nature, is not foreign to Jewish thought.....
Olam Hamiddos - A man will be acted according to his actions
This theory can help explain how mitzvot unconsciously change our inner selves - we act like we want to be. Meaning by replicating (Hashem's) actions that are based on good middos, our middos change to be like His.
Is tikun middos a mitzvah bein adam l'makom or bein adam l'chaveroh?
Is Yiriat Hashem the extrinsic or intrinsic motivation for tikkun hamiddos and/or mitzvot bein adam lchavero?
