What was the significance of the "Great Wealth" such that HaShem was forced, so to speak, to fulfill it? And why did HaShem promise this to Avraham in the first place? Furthermore, why does HaShem tell the B'nei Yisroel to "borrow" items when they are never going to be returned?
If it was a "Borrowing" then it was a lie told in order to further encourage the Egyptians to pursue them. If it was a "Gift" then we must say that the term "שאלה" is also used to denote a gift given at the request of the receiver.
(3) The LORD disposed the Egyptians favorably toward the people. Moreover, Moses himself was much esteemed in the land of Egypt, among Pharaoh’s courtiers and among the people.
The Egyptians gave their precious things to the Jewish People out of respect or admiration as opposed to fear.
We are seemingly forced to say that the promise to Avraham was primarily a spiritual one. After all, Avraham's question was: How will I know that my offspring will become a nation that is fitting to inherit me? The "Great Wealth" is primarily spiritual, but HaShem made good on His promise even in the simple meaning.
We can of course ask: What is the significance for the Jewish People leaving Egypt with a "Great Wealth" in a physical sense? Why did HaShem make good on the simple meaning of His promise when that was clearly not the intent of His promise?
It would seem to me that this is to send a message to the Jewish People as they are leaving Egypt. The Egyptians responded to the Jewish People's requests to borrow as if to say, "Sure, for people like you, anything!" That creates a shift in the self-perception of the people borrowing. They are to understand that they are not simply fleeing from their persecutors. (Why would their persecutors give them gifts out of respect?!) Rather, they are leaving with the status of not only free men, but as aristocrats, because that is how they are being treated.
So, in my opinion, the purpose of the "borrowing" was to uplift the spirit and self-perception of the Jewish People as they left Egypt.
