And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to tend it and to guard it.
Look at God's work - for who can straighten what He has twisted? (Ecclesiastes 7:13). When the Blessed Holy One created the first human, He took him and led him round all the trees of the Garden of Eden and said to him: “Look at My works, how beautiful and praiseworthy they are! And all that I have created, it was for you that I created it. Pay attention that you do not corrupt and destroy My world: if you corrupt it, there is no one to repair it after you."
R. Levi asked: it is written, "The earth is God's and the fullness thereof,"(Ps. 24:1) and it is written, "The heavens are God's heavens, but God gave the earth to humankind" (PS. 115:16) There is no contradiction; Humankind is forbidden to enjoy anything without saying a blessing over it...the former verse applies before one pronounces the blessing; the latter verse applies after one pronounces it.
...if you really listen to my commandments...to love the LORD your God, and to serve God with all your heart and all your soul, then... you will eat and be satisfied. [BUT!] be careful, lest your heart be seduced, and you turn away, and serve other gods, and worship them. Then the wrath of God will be upon you; God will stop up the heavens, and there will be no rain, and the Earth will not give its produce; and you will speedily be evicted from the good land that God is giving you..."
Water is called life, as it says (Zechariah 14:8), "Water of life went out [from Jerusalem]."

Listen, o heavens, and I will speak! And let the earth hear the words of my mouth! My lesson will drip like rain, my word will flow like dew; like storm winds on vegetation and like raindrops on grass.
Biblical Hebrew contains at least seven different words to describe liquid precipitation (geshem, matar, yoreh, tal, malkosh, revivim, se'irim), which denote different times and intensities of rainfall. Four are mentioned above.
The four new years are: ...On the first of Shevat, the new year for the trees according to the words of the House of Shammai; The House of Hillel says, on the fifteenth thereof.
Rabbi Pinchas Kehati comments on this Mishna: "The Talmud explains that the New Year for the tree was established in Shevat, 'Because most of the rains have already fallen, and the resin has come up in the trees, and as a result the fruits began to form now.'"

One day as [a man named] Choni was walking along he saw a man planting a carob tree. Choni asked him, 'How many years will it take until it will bear fruit?' He said to him, 'Not for seventy years.' Choni said to him, 'Do you really believe you'll live another seventy years?' The man answered, ‘I found this world provided with carob trees, and as my ancestors planted them for me, so I too plant them for my descendants.'
Position of the Reform Movement on the Environment (from rac.org)
As heirs to a tradition of stewardship that goes back to Genesis and teaches us to be partners in the ongoing work of Creation, we cannot accept the escalating destruction of our environment and its effect on human health and livelihood. It is our sacred duty to alleviate environmental degradation and the human suffering it causes instead of despoiling our air, land, and water.
For more than 40 years, the Reform Movement has been committed to protecting the environment. Some Union for Reform Judaism Resolutions include: Conservation and Development of Natural Resources (1965), Environmental Pollution (1969), Energy (1979), and Toxic Substances and the Environment (1983).
In 1991, the URJ passed a comprehensive resolution on the environment calling on the governments of the U.S. and Canada to protect endangered species; protect and create new wilderness areas; ensure clean air and water; and prevent environmental injustice to poor and minority communities. The same year saw passage of a New North American Energy Strategy, a Resolution supporting energy efficiency and conservation, developing of non-nuclear energy alternatives, and opposing expansion of offshore oil drilling.
The 2009 Resolution on Climate Change and Energy ties together many of these concerns in a comprehensive statement on the need for all congregations and institutions of the Reform Movement to take action to protect our environment from the emerging threat of climate change through local actions and advocacy.
Position of the Reform Movement on Climate Change and Energy
In 1998, the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) passed a resolution, "Confronting the Challenge of Climate Change," which calls on the federal government to negotiate, sign, and ratify binding international agreements to minimize climate change; and to appropriate the funds and adopt the policies necessary to meet these agreements. This resolution also calls upon Jewish organizations and Jewish individuals to conduct energy audits of private homes and communal facilities.
