אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ
Our God and God of our fathers!
אֶזְרָחִי הֵעִיר מִמִּזְרָח You inspired Abraham to leave the east.1God inspired Abraham who was called Ezrachi to leave his birth place in the east and go to Eretz Yisroel.
בְּרַגְלוֹ צֶדֶק זָרַח. Wherever he traveled, righteousness shone,2Abraham caused the. righteousness of God to be accepted.
גִּבּוֹר לָרוּץ אֹרַח. like a warrior, he ran the path of uprightness,
דָּגוּל כְּשׁוֹשָׁן פָּרַח:
from him sprouted the banner[s] like a rose.3A reference to the Twelve Tribes.
הוּא אַבְרָהָם הוּעַד. He was destined to be called Abraham,4His given name was Avrom.
וְצִדְקָתוֹ עוֹמֶדֶת לָעַד. and his righteousness endures forever.
זֶרַע לְמֵאָה To have a son at a hundred years
נִסְעַד. was he strengthened,
חוֹנֵן צַדִּיק God is gracious to the righteous,
וְסָעַד:
and is their support.
טַכְסִיסֵי מַלְכוּת לָמַד. He taught5The people of his time. the order of God’s kingdom,
יָעַץ נְדִיבוֹת וְלִמַּד. he advised them to be generous and hospitable,
כַּזָּהָב מְזֻקָּק וְנֶחְמָד as refined precious gold did he emerge
לְעֶשֶׂר נֻסָּה וְעָמָד:
from the ten trials that he withstood.
מוֹרִיָּה יְחִידוֹ הֶעֱלָה. To Moriah, he brought up, his only son,
הִצְטַוָּה מִנְּשִׂיאִים לְמַעֲלָה. as he was commanded from above the clouds,6From God Who dwells above the clouds.
סַנְסִינוֹ כְּגָדִישׁ עוֹלֶה. his branch7Isaac. he prepared as a burnt-offering,
עָקוּד כְּכֶבֶשׂ וְטָלֶה:
he bound him as a sheep and lamb.
פִּקּוּד כְּשׁוּרָה שָׁמַר. He kept God’s precept properly,
צִפְצֵף וּבְלֵב גָּמַר. in word and in thought he was determined,
קַחַת בְּלֵב תָּמָר. he took him [Isaac] with his whole heart,
רִצּוּיוֹ כְּנִיחוֹחַ לִתְמָר:
that he be accepted as a pleasant offering.
שָׁבוּ יַחְדָּו שְׁנֵיהֶם. They returned together, the two of them,
עֲשׂוֹת רְצוֹן קוֹנֵיהֶם having done the will of their Possessor.
תִּזְכֹּר מִנְחַת דִּשְׁנֵיהֶם. Recall [O God] the present of their ashes8Their willingness that Isaac be burned on the Altar.
אַחֲרֵיהֶם לִבְנֵי בְנֵיהֶם:
to their children’s children after them.
תָּרִיחַ קְטֹרֶת מַתְכֻּנְתָּם. Accept their prayer as incense offerings,
תֶּעֱרַב תְּכוּנַת עֲמִידָתָם. and may their standing [before You] be sweet.
תִּסְתַּכֵּל חֲקִיקַת תָּם Behold the engraving of the perfect one9Jacob whose image is engraved on the Divine throne.
תְּרַחֵם עַל שְׁאֵרִיתָם:
and have mercy on their remnant.
אֵל מֶֽלֶךְ. Almighty! King!
יוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רַחֲמִים. Who sits on the throne of mercy,
מִתְנַהֵג בַּחֲסִידוּת. governs with kindness
מוֹחֵל עֲוֹנוֹת עַמּוֹ. forgives the iniquities of His people.
מַעֲבִיר רִאשׁוֹן רִאשׁוֹן. He removes their sins one by one,
מַרְבֶּה מְחִילָה לְחַטָּאִים increasing forgiveness to sinners,
וּסְלִיחָה לְפוֹשְׁעִים. and pardon to transgressors.
עוֹשֶׂה צְדָקוֹת Acting righteously
עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ. with all who are of flesh and spirit;
לֹא כְרָעָתָם not according to their wickedness
תִּגְמוֹל: does He repay them.
אֵל Almighty!
הוֹרֵיתָ לָנוּ לוֹמַר You instructed us to recite
שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה. the thirteen Divine attributes;
וּזְכָר לָֽנוּ הַיּוֹם remember unto us this day
בְּרִית שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה. the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,
כְּמוֹ שֶׁהוֹדַֽעְתָּ as You made them known
לֶעָנָו מִקֶּֽדֶם. to the humble Moses of old,
כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב as it is written,
וַיֵּרֶד יְהֹוָה בֶּֽעָנָן “And Adonoy descended in the cloud,
וַיִּתְיַצֵּב עִמּוֹ שָׁם and stood with him there,
וַיִּקְרָא בְשֵׁם יְהֹוָה:
and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];
וַיִּקְרָא:
and proclaimed:
יְהֹוָה יְהֹוָה Adonoy, Adonoy,
אֵל רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,
אֶֽרֶךְ אַפַּֽיִם Slow to Anger,
וְרַב חֶֽסֶד וֶֽאֱמֶת: and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.
נֹצֵר חֶֽסֶד Keeper of kindness
לָאֲלָפִים for thousands of generations,
נֹשֵׂא עָוֹן וָפֶֽשַׁע Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,
וְחַטָּאָה and sin;
וְנַקֵּה: and Acquitter of those who repent.”
וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲוֹנֵֽנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵֽנוּ “And pardon our iniquity and our sin,
וּנְחַלְתָּֽנוּ:
and take us for Your inheritance.”
סְלַח לָֽנוּ אָבִֽינוּ כִּי חָטָֽאנוּ. Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,
מְחַל לָֽנוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ כִּי פָשָֽׁעְנוּ: forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.
כִּי אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי “For You, my Master,
טוֹב וְסַלָּח are good and forgiving,
וְרַב חֶֽסֶד and abounding in kindness
לְכָל קֹרְאֶֽיךָ:
to all who call upon You.”
