בֵּין כֶּסֶה לֶעָשֹוֹר Between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur
הִשְׁלַכְנוּ רֹעַ שְֹאוֹר. we cast away the Evil Inclination,1The Evil Inclination is often repeated to as the yeast in the dough as it ferments the passion to do evil.
צַדְּקֵנוּ בַּמִּשְׁפָּט justify us in judgment
בְּאוֹר הַחַיִּים לֵאוֹר. so that the light of life shines on us;
הִנְנוּ אָתָאנוּ לְךָ behold we have come to You
אַדִּיר וְנָאוֹר. Mighty and Glorious One,
כִּי־עִמְּךָ מְקוֹר חַיִּים, for with You is the source of life,
בְּאוֹרְךָ נִרְאֶה אוֹר:
in Your light shall we see light.
אָדוֹן עִמְּךָ סְלִיחָה, O Master, with You is pardon2It is in Your hands to pardon.
סְלַח וּמְחַל לְשָׁבֶיךָ. pardon and forgive those who return to You.3To those who repent.
לְעֵת חִתּוּם גְּזַר דִּינֶךָ, At the time when You seal Your decree,
לְטוֹבָה זָכְרָה אֲהוּבֶיךָ, remember [Israel], Your loved one for good,
יִוָּדַע כִּי אֱלֹהִים so that it be known that there is God
בִּישֻׁרוּן קְרוֹבֶיךָ. in Jeshurun,4Jeshurun is a name by which Israel is sometimes referred. Your devoted ones,
וְשִֹימֵנוּ כַּחוֹתָם עַל־לִבֶּךָ: and set me as a seal upon Your heart,
בֵּין כֶּסֶה לֶעָשׂוֹר
between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
עֲבָדֶיךָ לְטוֹב תַּעֲרֹב, Be surety for Your servants for good,
צַו כִּתְמָם לְמָחְקָה. order that their stains [sins] be erased,
זָכְרָה מְצוּקֵי תֵבֵל, remember the pillars of the world5The merit of the Patriarchs.
פְּעֻלָּתָם אִם פָּסְקָה. if their [our] deeds are not sufficient;
רַחֵם בְּרֹגֶז תִּזְכֹּר [even] in anger remember to be merciful
בָּנֶיךָ עֵת חֲקוּקָה. when You engrave [the fate] of Your children.
כָּתְבָה עַל־לוּחַ חוֹתָם Inscribe them on Your tablet
וְעַל־סֵפֶר חֻקָּהּ: and inscribe them in Your book [for life],
בֵּין כֶּסֶה לֶעָשׂוֹר
between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
בְּתַחֲנוּנִים כְּרָשׁ וְדַל, With supplications like the poor and needy
לְפָנֶיךָ קָרְבוּ. they approach You,
רְאֵה עָנְיָם מֹרֶה מְאֹד, look on their most bitter misery,
בְּלַחַץ בְּשֶׁפֶל יֵשֵׁבוּ. how they live in oppression and degradation;
בְּיוֹם חִפּוּשֹ תַּעֲלוּמוֹת on the day when hidden things are searched.
עֶלְיוֹן O Most High,
בְּךָ עֵינֶיךָ יֵיטִיבוּ. let them find favor in Your eyes,
וְעַל־סִפְרְךָ כֻּלָּם יִכָּתֵבוּ: and may they all be inscribed in Your book,
בֵּין כֶּסֶה לֶעָשׁוֹר
between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
שׁוֹחֲרֶיךָ הִמָּצֵא Let those who seek You, find You,
לְחַנֶנְךָ עוֹמְדִים הַשְׁכֵּם. those who rise early to entreat You,
לְבַל יָעֹז קַטֵּגוֹר that the Accuser not prevail
בְּעֵינֶיךָ בַּל־יִתְחַכֵּם. and not seem wise in Your eyes;
מְלִיצִים וּפְרַקְלִיטִים with [our] advocates and defenders—
בְּחַסְדְּךָ עִמָּם הַסְכֵּם. agree with them in Your kindness,
כִּתְבוּ עַל־הַיְּהוּדִים [say to them:] “Write concerning the Jews
כַּטּוֹב בְּעֵינֵיכֶם: as it is good in their eyes,”
בֵּין כֶּסֶה לֶעָשׂוֹר
between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
הֵן רוּחַ וְלֵב עַמְּךָ Behold the spirit and heart of Your people
שָׁבוּר וְחוֹלֶה. are broken and sick,
הֵן חַטָּאת let that6Their broken hearts and spirits. be as a sin-offering
וְאָשָׁם and as a guilt-offering,
וְנֶדֶר אֲשֶׁר יַפְלֶא. and as the fulfillment of a vow-offering.
אֱמוּנִים Let the [committed] faithful
וּבֵינוּנִים and the uncommitted
חֲתֹם חוֹתָם מָלֵא. be sealed indelibly
אֵלֶּה לְחַיֵּי עוֹלָם וְאֵלֶּה: to everlasting life,
בֵּין כֶּסֶה לֶעָשׂוֹר
between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
לֹא לְפִי רְאוּיִים Not according to their merit
תִּשְׁפֹּט הֲמוֹנַי. should You judge my congregation,
יְשֻׁרוּן מְיַחֲדֶיךָ Jeshurun, who proclaim Your Oneness
אַף בְּלַחַץ מוֹנַי. even under the oppression of my enemies;
גְּלִיפַת כְּתָב צַוֵּה לִשְׁבַח order their engraved inscription for praise
וְלֹא לִגְנַאי. and not for disgrace,
מִפְתַּח פִּתּוּחֵי חוֹתָם let their engraved seal [read:]
קֹדֶשׁ לַיהֹוָה: “They are holy to Adonoy,” [do this]
בֵּין כֶּסֶה לֶעָשׂוֹר
between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
לְפַתּוֹתְךָ בְּתַחַן, To appease You with supplication,
עֲבָדֶיךָ מַסְכִּימִים. Your servants have agreed,
הִפָּתַח לָמּוֹ be accessible to them
וּזְכֹר נִחוּמִים. and remember [Your assurances of] comfort;
חַסְדְּךָ הַפְלֵא, do wonders for them in Your kindness,
וְהַעֲבֵר כְּתָמִים. and remove their [sins] stains,
אֵל מֶלֶךְ Almighty! King,
יוֹשֵׁב עַל־כִּסֵּא רַחֲמִים: Who sits on the throne of mercy,
בֵּין כֶּסֶה לֶעָשׂוֹר
between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
אֵל מֶֽלֶךְ. Almighty! King!
יוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רַחֲמִים. Who sits on the throne of mercy,
מִתְנַהֵג בַּחֲסִידוּת. governs with kindness
מוֹחֵל עֲוֹנוֹת עַמּוֹ. forgives the iniquities of His people.
מַעֲבִיר רִאשׁוֹן רִאשׁוֹן. He removes their sins one by one,
מַרְבֶּה מְחִילָה לְחַטָּאִים increasing forgiveness to sinners,
וּסְלִיחָה לְפוֹשְׁעִים. and pardon to transgressors.
עוֹשֶׂה צְדָקוֹת Acting righteously
עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ. with all who are of flesh and spirit;
לֹא כְרָעָתָם not according to their wickedness
תִּגְמוֹל: does He repay them.
אֵל Almighty!
הוֹרֵיתָ לָנוּ לוֹמַר You instructed us to recite
שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה. the thirteen Divine attributes;
וּזְכָר לָֽנוּ הַיּוֹם remember unto us this day
בְּרִית שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה. the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,
כְּמוֹ שֶׁהוֹדַֽעְתָּ as You made them known
לֶעָנָו מִקֶּֽדֶם. to the humble Moses of old,
כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב as it is written,
וַיֵּרֶד יְהֹוָה בֶּֽעָנָן “And Adonoy descended in the cloud,
וַיִּתְיַצֵּב עִמּוֹ שָׁם and stood with him there,
וַיִּקְרָא בְשֵׁם יְהֹוָה:
and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];
וַיִּקְרָא:
and proclaimed:
יְהֹוָה יְהֹוָה Adonoy, Adonoy,
אֵל רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,
אֶֽרֶךְ אַפַּֽיִם Slow to Anger,
וְרַב חֶֽסֶד וֶֽאֱמֶת: and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.
נֹצֵר חֶֽסֶד Keeper of kindness
לָאֲלָפִים for thousands of generations,
נֹשֵׂא עָוֹן וָפֶֽשַׁע Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,
וְחַטָּאָה and sin;
וְנַקֵּה: and Acquitter of those who repent.”
וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲוֹנֵֽנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵֽנוּ “And pardon our iniquity and our sin,
וּנְחַלְתָּֽנוּ:
and take us for Your inheritance.”
סְלַח לָֽנוּ אָבִֽינוּ כִּי חָטָֽאנוּ. Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,
מְחַל לָֽנוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ כִּי פָשָֽׁעְנוּ: forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.
כִּי אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי “For You, my Master,
טוֹב וְסַלָּח are good and forgiving,
וְרַב חֶֽסֶד and abounding in kindness
לְכָל קֹרְאֶֽיךָ:
to all who call upon You.”
אַל תִּזְכָּר לָנוּ עֲוֹנוֹת רִאשׁוֹנִים. Remember not the sins of our ancestors;
מַהֵר יְקַדְּמוּנוּ רַחֲמֶיךָ let Your compassion come swiftly toward us,
כִּי דַלּוֹנוּ מְאֹד: for we have been brought very low.
חַטֹּאת נְעוּרֵינוּ וְפְשָׁעֵינוּ The sins of our youth and our transgressions,
אַל תִּזְכֹּר remember not;
כְּחַסְדְּךָ זְכָר לָנוּ אַתָּה with Your kindliness remember us
לְמַעַן טוּבְךָ יְהֹוָה for the sake of Your goodness, Adonoy.
זְכֹר רַחֲמֶֽיךָ יְהֹוָה Remember Your mercies, Adonoy,
וַחֲסָדֶֽיךָ and kindlinesses
כִּי מֵעוֹלָם הֵֽמָּה: for they are from the beginning of the world.
זָכְרֵֽנוּ יְהֹוָה Remember us Adonoy
בִּרְצוֹן עַמֶּֽךָ with favor for Your people
פָּקְדֵֽנוּ בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ: recall us with Your deliverance.
זְכֹר עֲדָתְךָ Remember Your congregation
קָנִֽיתָ קֶּֽדֶם which You have acquired of old,
גָּאַֽלְתָּ שֵֽׁבֶט You have redeemed the tribe
נַחֲלָתֶֽךָ of Your inheritance,
הַר צִיּוֹן זֶה שָׁכַנְתָּ בּוֹ: this mountain of Zion where You have dwelled.
זְּכוֹר יְהֹוָה חִבַּת יְרוּשָׁלָֽםִ Remember, Adonoy, the affection of Jerusalem,
אַהֲבַת צִיּוֹן אַל תִּשְׁכַּח לָנֶֽצַח: the love of Zion, forget not until eternity.
זְכֹר יְהֹוָה Remember, Adonoy,
לִבְנֵי אֱדוֹם אֵת יוֹם יְרוּשָׁלָֽםִ to the sons of Edom, the day of Jerusalem,
הָאֹמְרִים [it was they] who said,
עָֽרוּ עָֽרוּ עַד הַיְסוֹד בָּהּ: “Raze it, raze it to its very foundations.”
אַתָּה תָקוּם You will arise
תְּרַחֵם צִיּוֹן. and have compassion on Zion,
כִּי עֵת לְחֶנְנָהּ for it is time to be gracious to her,
כִּי בָא מוֹעֵד: for the appointed time has come.
זְכֹר לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיִשְׂרָאֵל Remember Abraham, Isaac, Israel,
עֲבָדֶֽיךָ Your servants,
אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּֽעְתָּ לָהֶם בָּךְ to whom You swore by Your very Self,
וַתְּדַבֵּר אֲלֵהֶם and You said to them:
אַרְבֶּה אֶת זַרְעֲכֶם “I will multiply your seed
כְּכוֹכְבֵי הַשָּׁמָֽיִם. as the stars of the heavens;
וְכָל הָאָֽרֶץ הַזֹּאת אֲשֶׁר אָמַֽרְתִּי and all this land that I have promised,
אֶתֵּן לְזַרְעֲכֶם I will give to your descendants,
וְנָחֲלוּ לְעוֹלָם: and they will inherit it forever.”
זְכֹר לַעֲבָדֶֽיךָ Remember Your servants,
לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיַעֲקֹב. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob;
אַל תֵּֽפֶן אֶל קְשִׁי הָעָם הַזֶּה do not regard the stubborness of this people,
וְאֶל רִשְׁעוֹ וְאֶל חַטָּאתוֹ:
or their wickedness, or their sin.
אַל נָא Do not, we beseech You
תָשֵׁת עָלֵֽינוּ חַטָּאת place upon us this sin,
אֲשֶׁר נוֹאַֽלְנוּ וַאֲשֶׁר חָטָֽאנוּ:
wherein we have acted foolishly and sinned.
חָטָֽאנוּ צוּרֵֽנוּ We have sinned, our Rock;
סְלַח לָֽנוּ יוֹצְרֵֽנוּ:
pardon us our Creator.
