Shabbat Shirah: How Many Songs?
תנו רבנן השיר מעכב את הקרבן דברי רבי מאיר וחכמים אומרים אינו מעכב
§ The Sages taught in a baraita: The song that the Levites sing while a communal offering is being sacrificed is an indispensable component of the offering, which means that if the Levites did not sing, the offering is invalid. This is the statement of Rabbi Meir. And the Rabbis say: It is not indispensable.
רב מתנה אמר מהכא (דברים כח, מז) תחת אשר לא עבדת את ה' אלהיך בשמחה ובטוב לבב איזו היא עבודה שבשמחה ובטוב לבב הוי אומר זה שירה ואימא דברי תורה דכתיב (תהלים יט, ט) פקודי ה' ישרים משמחי לב משמחי לב איקרי טוב לא איקרי
Rav Mattana said that the source for the requirement to accompany the Temple offerings with song is derived from here: “Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joyfulness, and with goodness of heart” (Deuteronomy 28:47). What is this service of God that is performed with joyfulness and with goodness of heart? You must say that this is song. The Gemara objects: But you can say that this service is studying the words of Torah, as it is written: “The precepts of the Lord are upright, rejoicing the heart” (Psalms 19:9). The Gemara explains: Torah is indeed called a matter that rejoices the heart, but it is not called “goodness.”
אָז יָשִׁיר משֶׁה, הֲדָא הוּא דִּכְתִיב (תהלים צג, ב): נָכוֹן כִּסְאֲךָ מֵאָז, אָמַר רַבִּי בֶּרֶכְיָה בְּשֵׁם רַבִּי אַבָּהוּ, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁמֵּעוֹלָם אָתָּה, לֹא נִתְיַשֵּׁב כִּסְאֲךָ וְלֹא נוֹדַעְתָּ בְּעוֹלָמְךָ עַד שֶׁאָמְרוּ בָּנֶיךָ שִׁירָה.
“THEN MOSHE SANG” (Ex. 15:1). This is what is meant when it says, "Your throne is established from of old“ (Ps. 93:2). Rabbi B'rechya said in the name of Rabbi Abbahu, "Even though You have existed for ever, Your throne was not established, and You were not known in Your world, until Your children sang a song.

...Since the Holy One Blessed be He created the worked until Israel stood on the (shores of) the sea, no one proclaimed a song unto the Holy Blessed be He but Israel:
He created the first human being, and he did not proclaim a song.
He saved Abraham from the furnace and from the kings, and he did not proclaim a song.
And so regarding Isaac [who was saved] from the knife, nd he did not proclaim a song.
And so Jacob [who was saved from] the angel and from Esau and from the people of Shkhem, and he did not proclaim a song.
When Israel came to the sea and it was parted for them, they immediately proclaimed a song unto the Holy One Blessed be He.
As it is said, “THEN MOSHE AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL SANG” (Ex. 15:1). Said the Holy One Blessed be He, to those I have been waiting!

וַתַּ֥עַן לָהֶ֖ם מִרְיָ֑ם שִׁ֤ירוּ לַֽיהֹוָה֙ כִּֽי־גָאֹ֣ה גָּאָ֔ה ס֥וּס וְרֹכְב֖וֹ רָמָ֥ה בַיָּֽם׃ {ס}
And Miriam chanted for them:Sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously;Horse and driver He has hurled into the sea.

When Miriam the Prophetess
Sang
On the sea,
Moshe did not scold

אָ֣ז יָשִֽׁיר־מֹשֶׁה֩ וּבְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־הַשִּׁירָ֤ה הַזֹּאת֙ לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ לֵאמֹ֑ר {ס} אָשִׁ֤ירָה לַֽיהֹוָה֙ כִּֽי־גָאֹ֣ה גָּאָ֔ה {ס} ס֥וּס וְרֹכְב֖וֹ רָמָ֥ה בַיָּֽם׃ {ס}
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD. They said:I will sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously;Horse and driver He has hurled into the sea.

על שום מה נאמר "וַתַּעַן לָהֶם מִרְיָם"?
שהרי כבר בקעה השירה מפי משה, שנאמר "אָשִׁירָה לַה' כִּי גָאֹה גָּאָה"?
אלא שמרים ידעה שירה שמשה לא ידע.
מהו שירו של משה?
"אָשִׁירָה לַה'" היא שירת היחיד הבודד, שאינה מצטרפת לכלל מקהלת קולות וניגונים.
ביקש משה להוציא את הקול מתוך ליבו של כל אחד ואחד ולגאול את שירו.
אבל שירת הגאולה לא הייתה עדיין שלמה.
ומהי שירתה של מרים? "שִׁירוּ לַה'", לשון רבים היא.
למדה מרים: "אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה דִּבֶּר ה' אֶל כָּל קְהַלְכֶם בָּהָר מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ הֶעָנָן וְהָעֲרָפֶל, קוֹל גָּדוֹל וְלֹא יָסָף" (דברים ה, יח).
"קוֹל גָּדוֹל" על שום מה?
על שום שהוא מכיל בתוכו ריבי רבבות קולות, מבטאים, לשונות וצלילים.
שהקול קול אלוהים והצלם צלם אלוהים – מורכב מכל בני האנוש, על פרצופיהם ודעותיהם השונים.
על כן קראה "שִׁירוּ לַה' כִּי גָאֹה גָּאָה" – שהיא מאספת ומצרפת כל הקולות כולם, ומחברת את "אָשִׁירָה" האישי לשירה משותפת ורבת פנים.
אמרה להם מרים: "שִׁירוּ לַה'" והזכירו לעצמכם את צלם אלהים אשר בכם, מורכב משבעים פנים ומשבעים לשון ומשבעים ניגונים. "שִׁירוּ לַה' בָּרֲכוּ שְׁמוֹ" (תהלים צו, ב): בשעה שאתם שרים לו, אתם מברכים את שמו.
Why is it written: “Miriam called out to them in response”?
For song had already burst forth from Moshe’s lips, as it is written, “I shall sing to the Eternal, He is to be exalted”
Whereas Miriam knew a song which was unknown to Moshe.
What was the song of Moshe?
“I shall sing to the Eternal”. This is a song of one voice that does not join with a chorus of voices and melodies.
Moshe sought to bring forth from each person’s heart and to redeem each person’s song. But the song of redemption was not complete.
And what is the song of Miriam? “Sing to the Eternal”. In the plural.
Miriam taught: “The Eternal spoke these words to your entire assembly […] with a great voice, which did not cease.” (Deuteronomy 5:18).
What is the meaning of “a great voice”? It means that it contains within it a multitude of voices, accents, languages and sounds. For the voice is the voice of the Divine, and the image is the image of Divine – made up of each person, each unique in form and thought.
Thus she sang, “Sing to the Eternal for He surely increased” – for this collects and unites all voices, and includes each personal “I shall sing” in the multi-faceted shared song.
Miriam said to them, “Sing to the Eternal” and they recalled the image of God that was within them, made up of seventy faces and seventy tongues and seventy melodies.
“Sing to the Eternal, praise His name” (Ps 96, 2). When you sing to God, you praise God's name.
