רבן גמליאל אומר בכל יום ויום מתפלל אדם שמנה עשרה רבי יהושע אומר מעין י"ח ר"ע אומר אם שגורה תפלתו בפיו מתפלל י"ח ואם לאו מעין י"ח ר"א אומר העושה תפלתו קבע אין תפלתו תחנונים
ת"ר שמעון הפקולי הסדיר י"ח ברכות לפני רבן גמליאל על הסדר ביבנה אמר להם ר"ג לחכמים כלום יש אדם שיודע לתקן ברכת הצדוקים עמד שמואל הקטן ותקנה לשנה אחרת שכחה והשקיף בה שתים ושלש שעות ולא העלוהו.
אין עומדין להתפלל אלא מתוך כובד ראש חסידים הראשונים היו שוהין שעה אחת ומתפללין כדי שיכוונו לבם לאביהם שבשמים אפילו המלך שואל בשלומו לא ישיבנו ואפילו נחש כרוך על עקבו לא יפסיק
רַבִּי נְחוּנְיָא בֶּן הַקָּנֶה הָיָה מִתְפַּלֵּל בִּכְנִיסָתוֹ לְבֵית הַמִּדְרָשׁ, וּבִיצִיאָתוֹ - תְּפִלָּה קְצָרָה. אָמְרוּ לוֹ - מַה מָקוֹם לִתְפִלָּה זוֹ? אָמַר לָהֶם, בִּכְנִיסָתִי - אֲנִי מִתְפַּלֵּל שֶׁלֹּא תְּאַרַע תַּקָּלָה עַל יָדִי. וּבִיצִיאָתִי - אֲנִי נוֹתֵן הוֹדָאָה עַל חֶלְקִי:
מאי קבע אמר רבי יעקב בר אידי אמר רבי אושעיא כל שתפלתו דומה עליו כמשוי ורבנן אמרי כל מי שאינו אומרה בלשון תחנונים רבה ורב יוסף דאמרי תרוייהו כל שאינו יכול לחדש בה דבר אמר רבי זירא אנא יכילנא לחדושי בה מילתא ומסתפינא דלמא מטרידנא
Rabban Gamliel says: Every day one must recite the 18 Blessings. R. Joshua says: A summary of the 18 Blessings. R. Akiva says: If his prayer is fluent he says the 18 Blessings, if not he recites the summary. R. Eliezer says: One who makes his prayer fixed, that prayer is not [true] petition.
The Rabbis taught: Shimon the wool-spinner ordered the 18 Blessings before R. Gamliel at Yavneh. R. Gamliel said to the Sages: Is there anyone who can compose a blessing [against] heretics? Samuel the Small rose and composed it. The next year he forgot it, and he thought about it for 2 or 3 hours and they did not remove him.
Mishna Berakhot 5:1
One should rise to pray only from a place of seriousness. The early Hasidim would meditate for an hour before prayer in order to direct their hearts to their Father in Heaven. Even if a king greets him he should not return it. Even if a snake is wrapped around his heel he should not stop.
Mishna Berakhot 4:2
Rabbi Nechunia ben Hakanah used to pray when he entered the beit midrash and when he left a short tefilah.
His students asked him: What is this prayer?
He said to them: When I enter, I pray that I cause no harm in my teaching.
And when I leave I give thanks for my lot in life.
Bavli Berakhot 29b
What does 'fixed' mean? R. Yaakov bar Idi said that R. Oshaya said: One whose prayer feels like a burden. The Sages say: One who doesn't say it in the language of petition. Rabba and Rav Yosef both said: One who cannot add something new. R. Zeira said: I can add something new, but I fear that I would lose my place.
